Fifth Gear Downshift

Hey guys just purchased 2004 rx8 with 32,000 on it. While I do have post purchase regret, all that fades away when I am in the drivers seat. Anyways everything is cool except that sometimes, not all the time when I DOWNSHIFT into fifth there is a horrible grind. I am not sure that it is the clutch as everty other gear shifts wonderfully. Am I doing something wrong? I have tried to downshift into fourth (without letting the clutch out) then into fifth and this seems to alleviate the problem, but who wants to do that!!!!! What can be done? Thanx for your time

I have an 04 with 21k miles on it.. it does the same thing. It just developed a few months ago.. it will GO into 5th position with the clutch all the way down, but when i let off the clutch it pops it out.. it goes in easy tho. If i hold it there and let the clutch out, it pushes it and grinds like hell. It does it 8 out of 10 times.. sometimes ill get brave and it will catch just fine. Ive gotton used to just going from 4th to 6th and back to 4th to upshift.. 5ths sort of an uncessary gear in a way (to me anways). I had a synchro replaced at 11k, but that was 2nd and it wouldnt even go into 2nd with the clutch engaged.. 5th will go in but pops out when the cluch is let up. strange..

if you get it checked please post what the mech found..

Were you aware of the two "TSB" that might be your problem? Look them over closely, it could be heat damage.

Or you might try SYN-Trans fluid, That might help the trans.

Why whine about it at all. Both cases shown are still under warranty unless you have done something dumb to the car,. Just take it to the dealer. With the grinding you discuss, the longer you wait the more damage you could do.
