Fan noise once car is turned off??

Temps finally reached in the 90s today. When I got back from a spirited drive, I shut the car off and as I'm walking away, I heard a fan noise coming from the engine. Is this a cooling mechanism? What's going on?

Perfectly normal!

It will automaticly shut off when the coolant temp drops below a specific temp.

Even most VW's even have an secondary electric water pump that even circulates coolant after the car is shut down! So do not worry . It will shut off after a few minutes.

Your radiator fan is running. It will run after the car shuts down if the engine temperature is high enough. It is perfectly normal.

I liken it to her "panting" after a good run on a hot day.

This freaked me out too the first time.

I read the manual and knew it would do this but after 3 months in south Florida I never heard it. Then suddenly one day last week, of course right after I get the car back from the dealership for my first oil change, it happened.

I turned off the car, got out and thought, "Oh crap I left the keys in the ignition and forgot to turn off the car!", then realized I had the keys in my hand.... scratched my head a bit till I remembered that little paragraph in the manual.

It did it again about 2 days later as I got home and pulled into the garage.

So over 3 months, of daily driving the car in Florida's sun to only kick on twice seems somewhat odd... but hey if it's running cool then I'm not going to complain

Yea, my fan came on a few times last summer. I did RTFM, but didn't remember that part... so the first time it scared me and I ran inside and searched the forum, and... aha! Perfectly Normal

It is very unsettling though to walk away from the car with something running like that, lol.
