I bought my 8 about 3 weeks ago and got a decent deal on it. Long story short when filling out the paperwork they asked me if i would like to buy an extended warranty for just short of 2500 bucks, after a brief train of though i decided to go for it. That train of thought being that i didn't know much about rotary engine work, and figured i should go for it. (Im very good with piston motors and all general maintenance and some more complicated things with all cars, just a little gun shy of the apex seals and such things) Now looking over my options, i think i want to return my warranty for a full refund being that it hasn't been 30 days yet. I feel i would rather save the money i would spend on the warranty and do my own work and buy the parts/upgraded parts i wish to. What do all of you think. I really want to turbo my car in the future for one, and i dont want to have to wait till my warranty is up in order to do that. Or is it worth it to keep it for the 3 yr, 36,xxx miles (which ever comes first) and wait to do any serious modifications. Let me know what you all think, Keep or Sell?

I am thinking about extending my plan too. However, I am at 92K now and I think I might just get a beater. If anything happens to the Renesis I am going to swap anyways....

 

There was a news report on extended warranties on tv the other day. Extended Warranties are not worth it.

 

I had an extended warranty and needed a rebuild, they canceled the warranty becuase my car was lowered.

I had to rebuild the engine myself, lucky for me I did. Those companies only approve the use of the cheapest knock off OEM parts available.

Just be aware your engine will blow and you will need to pay for the rebuild, i wouldn't recommend doing it yourself. Unless of course you have some engineering qualifications and a helping hand.

 

Its a 2004 6spd, and I have 55,xxx right now. Second owner, seems to have been well treated and taken care of. Give me more feedback. Seems like most say don't keep it.

 

What TV station was this on? Can you fill us in on the major points, why they felt extended warranies are not worth it?
My big stance is I hate half assed work and cheap parts on my cars. I am very particular and a bit OCD to say the least. I just feel like I put a lot of thought and time into maintaining and treating my car to good practices ( warming, driving, ect) and they don't care how the work ends up as long as its out of their bay.

Yes, i did read you post. However, I just found it hard to believe that there is nothing good about a ext warrenty, at all!

 

Mazda has 100K/8 yr warranty on the Engine.

the rest of the stuf are pretty much "industry standard" and you should be able to handle them.

As for "return the extended warranty" I think they will give you a really hard time on it.

If its any consolation they screwed my old roommate out of her extended warranty as well. She had reported transmission problems to the company a month prior to the factory warranty failing. they wouldn't cover her transmission because she could have had it taken care of under factory warranty.

They did however cover the repair to the axel and oil pan seal.

If you never plan on modding your car and you plan on your OMP breaking and your steering rack I suppose it would be worth it.

 

They actully can't give me any hard time at all. It specifically states in the warrenty info, under returns and retro refunds. Any warrent sold under a new car has 60 days and any warrenty sold under a used car has 30 dars for a full refund. As long as it was not used and such things.

When you bring it to the dealership for warranty repair work, you should put it back to stock specifications. When you lower your car with aftermarket springs and shocks, you should keep the stock springs and shocks just in case.

Well, looks like ill head over to the dealer tomorrow. Iv already been in once to return it and they were not too pushy not to let me. I just decided i would wait a couple days and see what all of you thought about it. I had a pretty good idea that i would not be keeping it, but just wanted to check it all the way out before i did. I think extended warrantys are a great idea. It just depends what type of car you have and what the warranty covers. I know my mom bought one for like $2000 and had her transmission die on her, she paid $100 deductible(or whatever it is) and they fixed it for her. That more than paid for the warranty right there. She also does not mod her car so it was 100% stock.

If you blow your engine and get denied on the warranty because of lowering springs then you didn't fight hard enough. Don't they have to prove that the lowering springs caused your engine failure to deny you?

 

I would get rid of it. The engine is already covered for 8 years / 100k miles anyway. Even if your transmission goes out or something you could probably get it fixed for the 2500 you payed for the warranty.

So unless you are really unlucky I doubt it's worth it.

 

Well...my .02 is i just bought my late in-service date 08 - had 6831 when i got her, now has 8800. I paid cash..plan to keep it for at least 2-3 years. Won't be doing any real engine mods...and the current bumper to bumper expires in November. I'm going with the Mazda Extended Protection Plan for around 1500 ( i negotiated a hard deal) and that will take me to 75k - with 50 and 100 deductibles.

I think it's worth it...to walk in, say "fix it" - and they do it.

Again...just my 0.02....

If I were a heavy modder...not so sure the above would be my choice.

 

I do plan on modding for sure, no doubt about that. And thats where my initial reason to refund came to mind. My biggest issues with it isn't that i may pay for it without using it, its that when i go to use it ill get f'ed over and have to fight my way to get someone to half *** my repairs. Iv been screwed by repair shops before, i dont think i want to deal with it again.

 

My extended warranty was $1200.

So far it has covered $1480 in repairs.

Worth it.

 

Most of the dealerships will deny you because of this or something you modified or changed. If they find just one thing that you change that is not the original oem specifications, then good luck.
