expired tags = ticket
well, i got a ticket today (in front of my house) for expired tags. $25
my question is that when i bought the car from carmax the tags were of MARCH 2009
but then, i am confused about where to get tags... because i got the registration card from carmax today, but there were no tags included.
what should i do... about the $25... am i responsible for it or is carmax?

When you buy a car with a temporary tag you usually have 30 - 60 days (depending on state laws) to obtain a Tag. It sounded like this came with tags on it. When did you buy the car? Before the end of March 09?
If the tag was expired when you received the car, it should have been removed and you given a dealer tag.
If you received the car before the end of March 09 then the tag was legal when you received and therefore you would be responsible.
Get the tag updated by the time of your court date or before and go show them proof and alot of times the ticket will be dismissed, again depending on state laws.
I think the best you can hope for though is that if you purchased the car after 04/20/09, you can go ask for a dealer tag and show that your dealer tag was not expired yet and that you had just purchased the car.
I doubt you can pin anything back to Carmax though. I'm sure someone else will know California state law specific guidelines on this though.

I would suggest calling the DMV. I had a freind that had a similar issue, only to find out that the DMV was back logged, and had not updated their computers to show he had paid his tags. So when the cop ran a check the tags came back as expired, even though the tags had just been paid a few weeks earlier.

Carmax should have renewed the registration before the car left the lot. Check your paperwork; did you pay any DMV and/or registration fees? If so, back to Carmax; could be a DMV thing like Stacy mentioned.
