When i drive for long periods of time the center council becomes really hot.

(from the knee part of my legs through the stickshift part all the way to the cup holder)

Is this normal?

Actually, can you define "really hot"?

The transmission -IS- there, however it shouldn't really be classified as "really hot". Mine certainly puts out heat, uncomfortable on a hot day, pleasant on a cold one. On the other hand, your catalytic converter starts just back of your stick shift, and if it fails, massive heat is one indication.

Not saying this is it, but if you can define "really hot" a bit clearer, the answer may be more specific and more accurate.

 

^then again hes proabably not used to the 8, when i first got mine i was concerned too, cus i never drivin a car that put out heat like that next to me...soon realized it was fine

The heat that a healthy RX-8 puts out in that area was quite a surprise to me when I bought it. You'll get used to the free Starbucks warmer very soon.

 

Agreed. I was initially concerned as well. Just came to mind my friend's failing cat. The center console in the cup holder area was "blazing hot".

Yea its not hot as in burning my skin its just uncomfortable heat coming from the middle.

I don't really notice it unless i touch it or keep my hand on the center panel for sometime. At least when it starts getting colder out i will be all warm and toasty in there and it will keep my hot coco warm for me

Yup, definitely normal transmission heat then Your fine.

 

Move your hand then. Maybe your hand is heating it up? J/K

 

you can also warm ur socks and glove in there, when i warms up throw in the cup holder and close the compartment...drive for 10minutes and BAM, warm feet and hands

 

You can shield the heat, but its not something that a nub will do.

 

i put my engine and tranny in my trunk so i don't have this issue. of course it does throw off my 50/50 weight distribution so i usually have lots of twinkies under the hood to try to rebalance.

My gf and I sometimes in summer fry eggs in cup holder....and even boil water to make some tea to go with.......You can do that after driving around for 5 to 6 hours in 100 sumthin degree heat. :P

wonder why the sales people havent figured this out yet and tried to tell their customers its a feature of the car. lol.

sales person-"When the car is up to temperature, heat from the exhaust and transmission is used to keep your coffee, or anything else you put in the cupholder warm."

customer-"how do you turn it on?"

sales person "it just automatically comes on when its warm enough"

customer-"what if i have a cold drink in there and dont want it warmed?"

salesperson "...so have you seen the redesigned mazda 6?"

Yup. As it gets cooler it will not get as hot.

 

Sounds pretty normal, you will know if the heat changes from "hmm, thats warm" to "oh my god I just burnt my hand" hot that something might be wrong with your catalytic converter.

 

So? Does that mean it can't be discussed again?

I'm kinda tired of people telling everyone to search......I think every topic about our cars has been discussed before or talked about at least once.

I never knew what all the fuss was about until I went to LA and got stuck in some stop-and-go traffic.

Normally I never experience that and the air flow keeps my center console nice and cool, but when you're sitting there and the tranny is spinning... boy oh boy does it heat up the car fast
