the end of the road...

well it finally happened. I had a feeling that one day I might no longer have my rx-8 and it had to happen to me about a week ago.

I was in a accident with my rx8 around last week. I lost control around a turn and hopped a curb and busted my axel along with my suspension and several electrical components. I was arrested on the site for suspicion of DWI and they took me in for breathlizer test. My blood alcohol level was below the legal limit and they let me out the following day with no bond and no punishment except the suspension of my license of 30 days.

Here is where the bad part comes along. My insurance company has been looking at my 04 rx8 for a few days now. They came to the conclusion today on 4/20/2009 that the value of the repairs passes the threshold of the value of the car. They deemed it a total loss. Now car-less, and without a drivers license i really sure am feeling the pain of when someone takes things for granted.

I've had the car ever since i was 16 years old and now im 21. I have dished money in and out into the vehicle for 5 years now and for some reason i'm having a hard time getting over it. I have never in my life been a person who attaches themselves to the materialistic things in life, but this car sure is hard getting over.

I have never driven anything that stires my emotions so much and i hate myself for the stupid decision i made that night by driving. As far as what i'm gonna do after the insurance company cuts me the check for how much its worth is out of the question. I can't see myself in another car and i would sure love to hop into a newer rx8, but with this slumping economy, i doubt it will be possible.

It never let me down, it always made me smile. People tell me to leave old memories in the past, but its hard to let go after this car has been with me so long. It was a part of my life, i grew from a teenager into a man in this car and i just still can't believe its gone. It was my whole life at one point and I met a lot of nice and helpful people from this forum and even made a few friends.

I sure would love to roll with my rx-8 buddies again one day, but unfortunately for me, it probably wont be any time soon. I would love to thank this community for everything they've done. This car wouldn't of been the same without the knowledge ive learned here in this forum.

now i need as much money as possible to cover for my loss

i have certain parts in my garage some of you may be interested in. PM me for details

-VR INGS+ spoiler from fluidmotorsports (never been mounted)
-Accessport from MM
-Rotary performance midpipe

sucks to say goodbye to some of you, but this may be it...

thats why its so hard to let go. I'm even going as far as looking for any used rx8's in the area that seem like a good buy. Going to the dealer and getting myself into a newer one seems out the question for now..

Nonsense. You have plenty of knowledge about the RX-8 to share that prospective buyers, like me, don't!

I'm glad you learned your lesson from this unfortunate turn of events.

that sucks to hear

I'm actually from the houston area (in san antonio for college), but I'll be in houston soon and I'm trying to sell my car. If you're interested in getting an 8 again, then maybe we could work something out. Whatever you decide on getting, hopefully the insurance company doesn't rip you off...

Do some research so you're not just accepting the insurance company's value blind. You should be entitled to the retail value - what you'd pay to buy a similar one from a used car dealer. They should also add the sales tax to the settlement. Also check on whether they they cover any aftermarket stuff you may have added.

Tough story. At least you weren't hurt. Good luck recovering from being car-less and license-less.

Not to mention if you have gap coverage. Hell I didn't even technically have it and my insurance company decided to just throw it in. I totalled my mazda 6 march of 08' and they gave me like 12.5k for it. It was a 2003, base, auto, 4cyl with 88k miles when i crashed so yea it wasn't worth that..

Good luck man, and it's true that a lot of 04 models are selling for extremely cheap. I can't speak for your area, but here in NY, there's tons of 04 models selling for 10-12k. Of course, a lot of them have high mileage and probably a crash or two in the carfax =\

The post above about doing independent research on the price of the car to compare with what the insurance company will give you is good advice. Check Kelly Blue book or something similar for the retail price of an 04 RX-8, and that should be a good comparison.

With regards to the AP, please let me know the price. I'm interested in getting an AP sometime, and I'd like to help you out.

okay more info today on 4/21/09

i spoke with the adjustor who deemed the car a total loss. After adding up everything that was damaged in the accident the value of the repairs surpassed the value threshold of the car. The car has been in accidents in the past is why i figured the value dropped so low. Now i have several options.

The insurance company is willing to let me keep my car and they will re-imburse me with a 9k check to possibly get it fixed or do whatever with it.

Now i can let them keep the car and they will give me a check for 12.5k or so. They will be calling me with in the next few days to cover the details.

i know the option is up to me, but should i keep the car and repair it even if some of it comes out of my pocket?

or

let them just have it so i can start shopping around for a fairly well maintained 8.
