How the hell do I get my avatar to accept a picture i've taken with a digital camera. Everytime i try to load a new pic as my avatar, i get an error that the pic is too big. if i try to reduce it get blurry like my current avatar. Someone help me out, its driving me crazy......

when you change your avatar you should see this note:

Note: the maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 6120 bytes (whichever is smaller).
Some pictures look better than others at that resolution.

But how do i get my picture to that resolution? I tried before and it turns out like my current avatar. How did everyone else get theirs to look good?

I was going to offer the same "service" as -8- did. ;-)

The trick is to first re-sample the image down to the required resolution, then tweek the jpg compression until you dip under the file size limit.
