Drove a Porsche Cayman - Im keeping my 8

I got a nice promotion at work and the $ is a lot better. I decided to test the waters of other cars. In my previous car search I loved the Boxster, but I didn't want the soft top. Porsche just released a Cayman for 2007. IMO it is a beautiful car. Supposed to be the best handling Porsche yet.

I guess my RX-8 has spoiled me. The Cayman's tach needs to be at 4500 for power just like my 8, but I had to shift at 7000. Not as much fun. As far as handling goes, I think my 8 wins here also. My 30k Mazda makes the 68k Porsche look like a waste of a lot of gas money. BTW the gas milage on the Porsche is a little better :hahano:

In conclusion to those of you who think a more expensive sports car is better I must disagree. I'm taking my raise to the bank and saving for the 2010 Mazdaspeed, twin turbo, jet propelled, RX-8. I think I will pay cash.

BlueSky 07-30-2006 12:06 AM

That gas mileage on the Porsche is actually alot better. It's amazing what Porsche AND BMW can do with their 6 cyclinder engines.

Anyhow, did you try the S model or the basic Cayman model. I'm not sure if the basic model is out yet, but the S model should have more than enough power.

Raptor2k 07-30-2006 12:10 AM

I'm assuming you're talking about the Cayman S? They run for about $60k. Are the 2007s even out yet?

If you are indeed talking about the S, then I'd have to ask: What are you smoking?

BlueSky 07-30-2006 12:13 AM

Yeah serious. Car and Driver got around 4.9 seconds to 60 last time they tested it. They also preferred it over the Lotus Exige!!!

DARKMAZ8 07-30-2006 12:13 AM

hmmmmmmmmmm no!!!

ZoomZoomH 07-30-2006 12:16 AM

puff puff pass please kthx

i have sudden urge for white castle

0-60 in 5 seconds, 13.7 quarter mile, 255 lb-ft torque, dual-mode suspension, neat brakes. Worth the money, imo.

BlueSky 07-30-2006 12:17 AM

And its got a back-end as voluptuous and sexy as J-Lo's.

What does Car and Driver's preference have to do with kevsRX8's test drive and preference?

BlueSky 07-30-2006 12:23 AM

Absolutely nothing.

kevsRX8 07-30-2006 12:26 AM

Yes, guys I said the 2007 Porsche Cayman. The "S" is about 10k more. The "S" would probably be worth the cash for the increased speed. The standary Cayman has a 0-60 of about 5.9 according to the dealer. I unfortunately don't have the extra cash for the "S". That is why I drove the NON S Cayman.

Base price on the Cayman is like $50k but if you have ever shopped for a Porsche you will realize that they are very fond of options. By the time you order what you really want you end up spending at least 5k-10k.

As far as the back-end goes I have to agree the only thing better is J Lo.

BlueSky 07-30-2006 12:28 AM

Ok, understood. Yeah I wouldn't want a base Cayman either. When you know there is an S model, getting the base model really sucks.

Why not check out a E46 M3?

kevsRX8 07-30-2006 12:31 AM

M3 isn't a sports car no matter how much power and styling you put into it. They are good looking though.

I think I'm going to save the $ and buy the "S" next year.

I'm not ever selling the 8 though. It is way too unique.

BlueSky 07-30-2006 12:33 AM

Well I can't argue with that. The 8 is indeed one of the most unique cars on the road today.

Since you're gonna keep your 8, why not look into some force induction since you have some extra cash?

Or you could keep it and wait for a MS8 to come out in the future and get that.

DO IT MITCH!

So it seems the base Cayman is a rip off and the extra $10k on the S makes all the difference...hmm. I wonder what are the sales figures on the base...

kevsRX8 07-30-2006 12:39 AM

Don't want to void the warranty and honestly I am not unhappy with the get up and go of my 8. More power is always better but Johnny Law looks at a sports car too closely anyway.

BlueSky 07-30-2006 12:39 AM

Porsche really was arrogant with its price on the Cayman S. But it's still a awesome car.

ZoomZoomH 07-30-2006 12:40 AM

they don't have the base caymen listed on the porscheusa site yet...

kevsRX8 07-30-2006 12:42 AM

I bet it is popular with the posers (read small penis) :mdrmed: and the ladies.

But they are sitting on the lot in Charlotte NC.

The Dealer doesn't even have a price list for the options. He was guessing at the prices by looking at the Boxster price list.

Raptor2k 07-30-2006 12:44 AM

You know what's good? A 250 whp RX-8 would be nice. Where are those damn superchargers?

BlueSky 07-30-2006 12:45 AM

Awww don't be judgemental like that. If anything, the Boxster is what the ladies like.

Porsche's have always been drivers car. Even the Boxster is very well handling machine.

I've got a fantastic idea for you. Get a late model NSX!!!!

If I am going to get a late model it is going to be either a 2002 Viper (real power) or a Ferrari 512tr.

I will update everyone if I ever make a decision.

BlueSky 07-30-2006 12:53 AM

Viper may be "real power" but it's also a real brute. Not at all similar to the 8.

The NSX is one of the most looked over supercars in history. It handles like a dream, looks exotic, is plenty practical, and can be driven every day to work. So maybe it's not as quick as a supercar should be, but it's still a fantastic car that I would take over a Viper anyday.

You must have been under the influence while you were driving that Cayman S if you honestly think the 8 can handle better. Hey...I love my RX-8 and all, but I'm not ashamed to admit that the Cayman blows it the hell away in handling and performance. Friend of mine has owned his Cayman S for a few months, and to compare the handling of that car to the RX-8...it's like apples and oranges. The way the Cayman S tosses and turns is 10x smoother than the way the 8 does.

By the way, the Cayman will also leave the RX-8 in the dust, 9k redline or not. Oh and, it's simply called the Cayman S.

Raptor2k 07-30-2006 01:21 AM

^he didn't drive the S -_-

porsche vs. rx-8

the comparison seems a lil...i don't know...off

Porsche charges you a $15,000 surcharge per badge.

My boss is a long-time BMW guy. BMWCCA instructer, drives an E30 M3 as a track car and has to more E30's in the stable. He was in the market for a new car and test drove the Boxster S, Z4 (M roadster wasn't yet available at the time), and an S2000. He was shocked to find that the S2K was not only the cheapest, but was the best handling, most comfortable, and easiest to drive. It made his decision easy.

I took him for a ride in my 8 right after I got it and he was quickly jealous. Comments like: you have room for stuff, wow, the engine is smooth, it sure has a lot of grip, it doesn't get upsent bu bumps at all . . . and so on. I think he wishes he had looked at cars with roofs!

I got to drive an old 'bath-tub Porsche back when it was something new, it was a lovely toy especially compared to a VW! Got to play passenger when old Doc Witherspood bought his well earned Porsche but as a passenger, I and the rest of gang liked his old black sitt'in in a sofa Cad better.... but the Porsche was a lot more fun to drive than the Cad, and the feel of a Porsche is good, any Porsche - If some one gave me one I would not turn it down - if I had to choose between a Porsche and a BMW, the BMW would tend to be only slightly more magnetic, but I like the 8, I bought the 8 because, when I could afford any car, I still liked the 8th the best... and yes, the savings from an 8 can pay for a whole lot of gas! We would probably treasure the 8 more if we had to pay more for it!

dmp 07-31-2006 02:10 PM

Nobody who knows how to drive would say a Cayman is 'not as fun' as an rx8.

however...

if it's also taking into account the extra money you'll tack onto those monthly payments...the cayman wouldn't be as much fun http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...lies/tired.gif

knight7 08-01-2006 01:42 AM

the way i look at it its another porsche, it looks like everyother porsche, it could be 150,000 at the end of the day it still looks like a hard top boxter. IMO i completely hate porsches, why? because they all look the same. might have a stronger engine but if you cruisin at 30 it still a hardtop boxter. but thats just me.

Raptor2k 08-01-2006 03:02 AM

Cars by the same company look the same....so you hate them? o_0?

Do you hate beemers too?

Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, etc etc etc. They all look the same but they all look different. Hell the front grill on a Beemer has been pretty much the same look for the past 75 years. It's called Heritage.

I kind of agree though that Porsche needs to do something different soon. They've been milking the current look since the late 90's.

Mercedes is coming out with some radical new designs, but Porsche seems to be playing it safe.

alfy28 08-01-2006 09:11 AM

But that is what makes porhc awesome. they always pretty much kept the same look. Now i can think of a car that looked awsome back in the days but ended up looking fugly to me that is, which is the camaro and transam. If those 2 cars kinda of kept the same like how mustang did. I think they would of sold more. but turning to a missle shape car was not a good idea IMHO. Now the 08 camaro that is sexy.

the 8 reminds so much of the fc body shape. but just more up to date on styling.

have you seen the mazda website recently?

emailists 08-01-2006 10:13 PM

Wow - this is an encouraging that the 8 can even hold it's own with the non "S" Cayman.

I'm lucky to be able to even have a car at all here in Manhattan, and while I love many of the 2 seater vehicles on the market, none of them are practical for me. The fact that I can have a true 4 seater (that can hold plenty of packages, and big boxes since it has no b pillar) than handles like a 2 seater (and weighs only 3ooo lbs) is amazing.

This really makes me want to add the Axial flow supercharger to my 8 and just keep it another 10 years. The only car coming to the market that interests me at all is the new Camaro. But since that I think will be at least 500 or 600 lbs more - I just don't think it will be as tossable as the 8. Also a really small car that big inside (as everone whoos even been in the back seats comments) is a huge plus for parking here in NYC.

A 300 hp RX8 (probably what the Axial supercharger will provide) I think will make an ideal car, until some alternative energy vehcile is available (hopefully when I retire the 8 - damn those pure electric cars I read about in Autoweek are fast!!!)

SO, your agreeing with me? I made the point that cars can change while keeping the same underlying look and style.

How can someone agree, or disagree with that. lol.

kevsRX8 08-02-2006 11:02 PM

There is nothing wrong with a manufacturer keeping a theme througout the line. Lots of them do it. It is also a cost savings to interchange parts.

Don't get me wrong guys, the Porsche was very nice and I love the way it looks. But for the money the RX8 is much more car.

Plus we have a ton more room for the crap that I seem to accumulate.

beemers dont look exactly alike there is a big difference in them, you can see the difference between a 3 series and a 5 series from a far.

BlueSky 08-02-2006 11:24 PM

Porsche sells cars because they drive amazing, not because they look trendy or fashionable. Their basic theme/look hasn't changed for decades, but they have constantly improved upon everything that actually makes the driving experience better. That means something to me, and it should to an car fanatic. Porsche's are about the drive.

It doesn't have a B-pillar, but it DOES have a huge transmission tunnel. I dunno about "big boxes".... :)
