One thing that is worthwhile is having a basic understanding of how a manual gearbox works as it helps you understand why the car does what it does. It also helps to explain why certain things like hill holding, fast hard shifts and stuff like that are a big no no, even for beginners. Didn't mean to shove anything down anyone's throats though. When the stick noobs are ready, this stuff is really fun and rewarding. Good luck, have fun with your 6mts and congratulations on taking the plunge into learning to drive a manual! |
I hope that with the advent of the DSG gearbox and American's appetite for automatics, that the real H-gated, 3 pedal manual gearbox setup doesn't go the way of the Do-Do. Its good to see new people steping up to learn what is really a dying art.

wow that sucks. there needs to be stricter drinking laws. there should be doormen at bars and clubs with breathalizers who take your keys away if you dont pass the test. lol. wishful thinkin. wen i take corners i get into 2nd cause it has more acceleration. but if uyour in 3rd and your taking a corner a bit slow isnt that stressing your engine? i havent stalled since the first 2 days of driving stick except about 3 days ago. i was at a dunkin donuts drive thru with my gf and i thought i had it in neutral and i let the clutch out and i stalled. i got sad n mad. like a little kid who cant beat a game or somethin. lol. and as for heel toeing, as soon as im comfortable with regular shifting im gonna give it a try.

Let your tach be your guide until you have a good enough intuitive sense to make the decisions naturally. The car is pretty happy crusing around in the 3-4k range, but if you want to get on the gas you really need to be around 5k to not really "lug" it. In a car with a high rpm power band and little torque its going to take a bit of shifting. Take your time and don't be in too big a hurry to go to full throttle unless your sitting in the sweet spot of the powerband. |
It's cheaper to make the MT than any other option. MT is not going anywhere.

I think its a great technology, I'd love to see the world all dsg and traditional manuals with no automatics. Unfortunately I think its more likely that we'll see fewer and fewer traditional manuals.

Clutch has two positions "IN" or "OUT"
The way I manage slow motion traffic is more of: Clutch in select gear, Gas and clutch to move car, Clutch in select nuetral clutch out, coast. If you are moving a little faster then this will still work just select appropriate gear and then be careful not to let the clutch out if your revs are not matching the speed of the car. Make wheel hop and shows everyone you can't drive. |
i usually take open corners in third and closed in second.
Usually at about 20 mph in third and about 12 in second I actually span out the once because there is an area right at the bottom of our road that got my tires wet and i took a corner in secind and gave it too much gas and span out, it was so embarrasing |
