Please help, my driver's side door is not closing properly, it bounces unless shut abnormally hard. Alignment looks fine. Car is new.

Dealer said the body shop would try to bend the u catch mounted on the adjacent door. Said there was no adjustment.

Do not trust them. Rather avoid the hammer.

make sure the hinges etc are tight uh that is weird...

 

maybe the frame is bent... doubt it since it's new.

does the door line up to the fender, a-pillar, etc evenly?

 

are correctly aligned. I believe it is somehow related to the mechanism.

 

Bring it to the dealer or a body shop. they will align it for you.

 

Place both feet inside the car?

 

1) Check to make sure that the striker (the metal loop mounted to the rear door) is aligned correctly and is entering the "fishmouth" of the latch.

2) Make sure that the latch is not in the primary or secondary position before closing the door (meaning someone has latched it while the door was open). If this is the case, release the latch via the handle, but you may need to use a screwdriver to cycle the ratchet (the part that graps the striker) as on some latch design it cannot freely rotate.

3) In step 2, with the door open and using a screwdriver to simulate the striker, can you engage the ratchet into either of the locked positions? If the ratchet will not lock into place, then the pawl inside the latch is not working properly and is not securing the ratchet.

Some bad latch designs can allow water ingress which can either freeze a latch or remove some of the grease inside, causing the ratchet to stay open and give a bounce-back condition when closing the door. It's generally viewed as an FMVSS concern as your door must close and stay that way with the ajar switch indicator functioning properly to make sure the driver knows the doors are closed.

Even if you get it working, I'd get to a dealership and have it replaced. They can then send the faulty one back to Mazda who can forward it to the supplier who manufactured it.
