As an experienced rotary engine builder, I can tell you guys that the best thing you could do is to premix. If I bought an 8 brand new, from day one I would premix it and probably never have an issue with the car (non-electrical that is).
Since 1989 when mazda switched the rotary to an electrical controlled OMP, they have progressively leaned out the OMP injection ratio and the engines have lasted progressively less and less mileage. They are struggling to meet strict emissions, and keep the engine from using oil in order to help the cars sell. They are actually hurting themselves by doing so because of the bad rap the engines get later when they fail.
I never saw the oil burning of the older engines (no more than 3/4 quart between oil changes in general) as a problem, but clearly mazda continues to try and remove this as a part of the rotary engine.
BTW, premixing helped hot starting and idle stability on my recently purchased rx-8 with 111k miles on the original engine.

Yup..I bought it from a 1 owner lady who drove it 100 miles each day to knoxville and back. Still on original engine.
IF you change oil at <3000 mile intervals, flush coolant yearly or bi-yearly, and run sufficient omp/premix lubrication then any rotary can theoretically last 200-300k miles. Even for the older 7's, about 125-150k is the norm.

Okay guys we got screwed over by mazda i guess seems like it was a lie in order to meet emissions cause the car burns oil they did a new flash which probably lubes the engine even less seems like it = less emissions and now we are running dry i am pissed if this is the truth and the engine seems to run smoother but i dont get the 7rpm kick in anymore what the hell so was the older flash better how do i premix i am in Canada so what products are good

What i've done in the past, at least with the 7, is i just put about 8oz of MMO in the gas tank with every fill up... There are other things that pettit made called protek R that is made for that, but i haven't have any problems with MMO... Then again i'm on the 4th engine in the 7 so who knows....

Premix is like a fuel additive, that of course, you have to add it to your fuel. It provides addidtional lubacation for your engine.
The downside is that premix will lower the AKI(Octane) of the gasoline. So if you premix, you might want to use fuel with higher AKI(Octane) rating.
I had some problems with 87 Octane gas + Premix(8oz), but as soon as I switch it back to 93, the problem is gone.
I should try 89 + Premix sometime, but Im kinda lazy.
(I use Idemitsu, by the way)

Unlike most of you, mine burns more oil after the recall. However there was another change about 200-300 miles before the recall... my break-in period ended. So I only had one gas tank or so of high revs prior to the recall.

At this point, it appears that mine burns NO oil whatsoever.
I just had a 400+ mile, extremely vigorous mountain run with some very high speed highway sections before and after and I used absolutely no oil.
In fact, I've used zero oil since the new motor went in nearly a month ago.
The OMP is pumping up the feed lines (the bubbles move around and have changed color), but who knows where it goes.
