Does anyone own a 6 speed Auto?

Does anyone own a 6 speed auto? Heck, has anyone even driven one? I come here now and then and did a search, but I couldn't word it right so I didn't find anything about anyone owning one. I know the old autos suck, but I was hoping to at least inquire if the new was any better. I would hope the 06 could do a 0-60 of a least 8 seconds. Having a sports car have a 0-60 of above 8 seconds is just depressing to think about.

Here is a post I made regarding the 6speed AT two months ago:

Anyway, just as I expected, the pickup is a lot better and has definitely improved over the 4AT. However, the car is still not quite as fast as the manual. I think it might accelerate faster than the manual through the first few thousand RPM, but once again, thanks to the 7500RPM cap, the overall performance suffers and it ends up a little bit slower. 0-60 felt like it was in the low 7s but I didn't really count in my head or anything like that. It just felt like it was a little slower than what a street start would be with the manual.

Basically, for people who have never driven the RX-8 before and are interested in buying one in automatic, they won't be so disappointed with the acceleration this time around. It's somewhat satisfactory, and not a total dog like the old automatic was.

But is the improved acceleration in the 6AT enough to make it worth swapping over from the obsolete 4AT? I can't answer that.

On the other hand, I saw some fully loaded manual 05s on the front of the dealership's lot (one of them was actually a pearl white with red/black interior) with stickers that stated something along the lines of "Was $32500, now $25000" ...and who knows how low you can take it from there. Fully loaded 05 for less than a base 06. Good time to get a deal on left over 05s.

The 4spd AT is under 8 seconds, or mine is at least. How is it that you "know old autos suck?" Granted 4 gears is less than optimal, but I like it better than a sequential 6 speed with 2 gears < 1:1. A 5 speed would've been best, but Mazda isn't always on top of their game.

Take a look at what the 0-60 was on the FC or the NA and NB Miatas.

The 0-60 on a 1986 Buick Grand National GNX was <4 seconds (damn impressive for a pushrod 6 from the factory, turbo or not). But try taking one through some S curves. There's more to a sports car than 0-60 times. If it's too slow for you, you need to buy something else.

"OWNED" my butt.

I don't believe he/she/it was asking for your opinion on what makes a sports car. If you don't have anything nice to write, then don't post. And that goes for you to, Ngorx8.

The 6 speed Auto hasn't been shipped to the US yet. It won't be available until September at the earliest.

Really? So are you insinuating that I was imagining things when I test drove one two months ago?

By the way...I used to own a 4 speed automatic. Definitely over 8 seconds to 60 no matter what.

You can come to Washington DC and get one 2 months early.

I have a 2006 6-spd AT - I got it 2 months ago. I really like it. I know that people say sports cars should be MT, but my wife can't drive them worth a crap (even after owning a MT as a daily driver for 2 years), and the AT is rather nice in Washington DC traffic. The Sport AT makes it far better, and at this point, it is my preference over the MT - but maybe I'm just getting older. I bought this car for the rotary and the handling anyway. But, this isn't a MT vs AT thread. at 1000 miles now, I can tell you that I test drove three 4-spd AT 2005's at the end of the year (only 10-30 miles each), and while they were fun, they seemed to be lacking a little something. The new 6-spd AT's make up for that, have noticeable increased power, and are more fun to drive. I love mine. The draw back of the 6-spd AT is when I am in manual mode on the highway and in 6th gear, I can't directly shift to 4th gear, I have to down shift twice to get to it, and at 60 mph, just going down to 5th doesn't always provide me the power I am looking for and can get in 4th. That is just a nuance of the car that you get used to.

If you get one, make sure they flash the computer before you pick it up. They forgot to load the latest flashes on mine, and the check engine light came on at 788 miles for an error with the emissions system that wasn't true.

Have yet to see a test of it, but the new Miata with the 6sp. AT was recently tested and it showed times that were surprinsingly close to the manual. I'd guess low to mid 7's for the new 8 tranny.

I remember with the 4spd auto I used to have had the same problem. To get around it, I would have to shift out of sport mode and go back to regular automatic mode and simply floor the pedal. That would automatically make the computer drop to the lowest gear for maximum power. You probably have to do the samething with the 6spd auto. Sucks, but that's one of the prices you pay for letting a computer control everything.

What's the gearing for the overdrive of the 6 speed auto? And has anyone with the 6 speed auto posted their mileage?

Duhhhh.

6 weeks ago when I picked up the CX-7 they said the Automatic wasn't due to arrive until September. I looked at the Mazda inventory site and sure enough - they're in.

The CX-7 has the same problem with manual mode. It's not too bad but I rarely use it.

There are times when an automatic is nice to have. Stop & go traffic isn't what a manual trans is made for. Unfortunately the RX8 isn't exactly overpowered to begin with, so if 0-60 is what your after then auto or manual it won't matter the RX8 isn't for you.

If you want a world class handling car that seats 4 people the RX8 is a great choice. As a daily driver through ruh hour traffic an auotmatic may be a better choice, but the manual is pretty easy to drive.

Tim
5th gear : 0.713
6th gear: 0.582

Final drive: 4.3

should be about 20% lower revs than the 4AT. But at cruising speed, that would put you below 2k most of the time (60mph or less), and more than likely the converter won't stay in lockup that low, so revs will be higher. At 80mph that'd be 2700rpm, vs 3300 for the 4AT, so I'd imagine highway mileage could be quite a bit higher with the 6AT.
