Do you ever recommend the rx8 to ppl?
What i mean is, when a friend ask you about the rx8 because he wants to buy one. do you ever recommend that he buys one? or do you recommend he buys something else.
i dotn know, i always seemed to find my self telling them to get something else. when i think about it, i done the same thing when i had a FC while growing up. when lower grade class mates at my HS in okinawa was thinking about buying a FC , i would tell them to buy a silvia or a 180sx, if they wanted to skip AE86 or carina.
i guess its because if problem arise , i didnt want to be held accountable. even my sempai's who owns FC's (not sure how to say it in english, elder class mates?) would do teh same.
so my question is, do you guys find your self detering ppl that you know not to buy the rx8, or do not say anything and let them buy it.
only thing i tell them is, you have to love maintaining
just wondering if it was just me. i love the rx8 btw.

I take two things into consideration:
1) Will this person take good care of their car? Does this person even care about their car?
2) Is this person mechanically inclined? Will this person try to learn how to take care of the car mechanically?
If either is a no, then I won't recommend it.

I tell people that it's a good car IMO.
I tell them about the gas mileage and oil and how smooth it is and how fun it is drive.
People need to make up their own minds about it one way or the other.
I tell them what I know but it up to them.

But on a serious note. I just need to know if
1. They absolutely love the car even though its not a straight line speedster.
2. If they are capable of taking care of the maintance and are willing.
3. If their bank roll can support the car without going broke.

Well I do recommend it to people that are searching for a weekend car, I also tell them every pros and cons as well.
they need to make up their own mind.
If they are going to use it as their only car I would tell them that it will not be trouble free but managable.
We need to remember that this is a really good car for the money but as said earlier I wouldnt recommend a Porsche Cayman either if it will be their Daily driver.

I'm honest with people about having to take care of it, that it needs more care than your average car... but I have wholeheartedly recommended the 8... I bought one for my wife even. I freaking love this car. :P Then again, I'm still on my first engine, first transmission, and my first catalitic converter is safely in my basement where it belongs.

+1 w/bose and adamwzl - I'm afraid alfy will make fun of my friends
seriously though, i don't think i've ever suggested to anybody to get an 8.(Outside of my friends that already own an 8) I think my reasons have been stated by bose. I honestly don't think any of them would understand what it's like to own one. My friends that do like sports cars have a some-what shallow understanding of what makes a car a sports car. From simple observations i think a lot of them have this mind set that all sports cars need to be at least 300hp with a shat load of torque - handles and balance are secondary to them. I always hear it when they're in my car and we're jumping on the freeway - "hmmm, you're car's not that fast on the pick up huh?" - i say no but the second there's turns on the freeway they say "HOLY ****!! SLOW DOWN ASSH*LE!!!" - to which i always reply, 'you still think it's slow?'
I always believe that power without balance is uselss - and if a friend were asking me my opinion about a car i take into consideration if that person knows that - if they don't - then i suggest something else. If they do, I take em' for a ride in my car - i let the car do the explaining

I will recommend it if they understand the quirks and are serious about driving it properly. If they aren't willing to check and top off their own oil once a month, they should look elsewhere.
I have friends and relatives who don't even get their oil changed on time, let alone take care of the other maintenance... they'd KILL an RX-8 in a hurry...

I just shat myself
I'll tell people how it's really fun to drive and has many practicalities, but I typically say that it cant be your only car or else you'll find yourself immobile at times.

I kind of go with Bose on this too. It is a car with its own quirks and a really confused reputation. It's not a car for everyone by any stretch of the imagination but it sure as heck is one of the most fun to drive. It's really a driver's car that really likes to be driven hard. But...yeah, there's those plug issues, it intentionally drinks oil, it requires a little extra warm-up time...yadda yadda. But when you thrash this thing in a turn, and I mean, reaaallly get the tires crying...it's so...fun! You can't help but grin the whole time.
I don't know. I don't know how many of you have really, really pushed the ever living crap out of your car (excluding any clutch dumps and rev-limiter bouncing lol) but it's a very well made car. Well thought out. I have always been a rotary fan, this RX8 having been my fourth rotary car. But I dare say my FD couldn't hold a candle to this in terms of comfort and handling. Plus I'm six feet tall and I was tired of my knees always being all up in the steering wheel.
I tell people it's probably about one of the best mixes of every kind of car rolled up into one. It's pretty damn fast in a straight line, it makes a really awesome sound, it's easy on the eyes, it's a fricken four door with real seats, and it ruptures your drums in a hard corner but you have to almost treat it like a pet. Check for ticks, mites, dirty teeth and feed it regularly.

I recommend it to people who post here looking for reassurance, but I've never been asked by anyone in real life.
In fact, I don't think anyone has ever asked me for advice on what kind of new car to buy. I do get a lot of questions on how to fix stuff on their existing cars. I wonder if that says something about my friends...or about me?

Something else to consider is the price point. When my friend got his Base, Bone stock, No Wing, 6SPD RX8 in 2004, it was $36,000.
I got my 2004 with 34,000 miles with good service records, DSC, Six Disc and Wing for $12,900. Hell of a value when you consider it like that.
If you buy one new, (though the 09's are spiffy with the new styling and rear-end ratio change) it's almost foolish. Hell, Carmax had a VR R3 with only 4,600 miles for a scant $23,000. (I admit, I considered it LONG and hard)
Nice thing about buying a good used one is that all of the recalls are done for me.
