Different RX-8 Key Types!

Hey guys,

I just started this thread after finding out that Mazda has various different key types for different RX-8 years! I think it's really interesting that Mazda would do this.

I have an '05, so I have the switchblade style which I think is the best....looks really cool and is convenient!

To my understanding, here are the different key types according to the different years:

1) 2004...."Old Style - Normal Key".
2) 2005...."Switchblade Style".
3) 2006-2008...."Keyless Type with Remote Starter".
4) I'm guessing 2009+ will be the same as 2006-2008?

Anybody has any idea why Mazda would do this?

Thanks and God Bless you guys.

Ben.

To stop thieves.

It's hard to steal a car when you dont know which key to use.

You guys are confusing remote start with keyless start.

According to that it's only on the GT and 40th anniversary editions. I guess I would assume the rest get switchblade keys.

I have a keyless start.. If I'm not mistaken, the keyless start/entry started with the 2006 GT models and were part of 2007 GT models too.

No remote starts (i.e. you out of your car and you started up your car via wireless transmitter to "warm it up") unless it's aftermarket.

My 06 GT key also doubles up as a Mazda VIP VISA card. You mean yours doesn't? Strange... I think you need to activate it. Check Mazda.ca

I have MT 06 Shinka. It has keyless system. But it also comes with a key so can use the key is so inclined

I thought it was a Visa card or maybe a Mazda card.
No not remote start..thats just a confused person.
Arent we all confused?

And no CBen that's not as cool as the keyless system
Heck one does even have to use the key.
One just walks up to the car, push the nipple thingy and door unlocks ( as long as one has the smartKey somewhere on oneself/purse/etc

one gets in and turns the key switch ..boom car starts
NO KEY NEEDED!!
Now that's KWEL!

Anything is possible but might be pricey. cause then you have to install sensors to sense the keys then there are buttons on the door handles, and the change in the ignition key.

See I have an '06 with the switchblade too.

I like it because it saves space in my pocket but does anyone else find that sometimes while in your pocket the the key will pop out?
