A different octane question (I think)...

Couldn't find this with a search so here goes....

If you filled your tank half-way with 92 octane and the other half with 87, would the octane then be 89+?? Does the octane from the two different levels mix with each other or what???

Absolutely......

.....as long as we aren't talking two radically different kinds of gas. Two types from the same station can be averaged - that is how Shell makes 'Silver', there are only two tanks, Bronze and Gold (Optimax/V-Power) and they know that the result will be exactly half way between each tank's octane.

why wouldn't you just fill up with midgrade gasoline to begin with?

Mugatu,
I was just using those two figures for an example; if you mixed 93 and 89, then would you have 91? Or, if you add 85 (is there such a thing?) and 93, would you have 89?? I realize that you could just use mid-grade and get the same octane rating.....

Is that better??

For God's sake don't mix different octanes of gas at a 50-50 mix. The linear relationship between the oxidizer mixes makes for a matched molecular alignment, and the resulting detonation characteristics are much more volatile. One slight spark and you're the brightest fireball in town.

Did anybody believe that crap?

I think part of the reason is that sometimes gas is not just 10 cents more for each grade up. But you'd have to really be in a bind to make it worth spending 10 more minutes just to fill up.

That awfully similar to what I do with decaf coffee and regular coffee when I'm trying to painlessly detox for summer after a heavy coffee drinking winter.
