Did our cars depreciate a lot recently or is it just me?

It seems like prices on used RX8s I've seen have dropped quite a bit recently. About 4-6 months ago I'd see cars selling for about $1-2K more. Anyone else notice this? Anyone know why? Maybe not enough people interested in buying right now? I guess since it's been a pretty long running model that there is a lot of RX8s out there. I'm trying to save so I can buy a Porsche Cayman S in a year or two, I'll have to part with my 8 and it looks like I will take a hit on it. Oh well, it's not a bad car to take a hit on, I'm loving the car.

They have taken a hit but they are following the market. The economy is slowing down and there are so many 8's for sale out there right that you damn near have to give it away like I did with mine. The trade-in value on it was 15.2k and I got 16k. Not what I wanted because of how good of condition the car was in but I did what I had to to get the car sold.

I didn't want to sell the car either but I ended up cutting my payment in half and eliminating 5,500 of my debt.

Yeah I already have 43K miles on my car, I'm getting concerned because I will probably put another 20-25K or so on it before I sell it. I wish I had more money, unfortunately it's my daily driver so it gets consistent travel.

I just wonder if they will start to hold more value in a couple years. It would just be weird the day I see RX8s selling for $7-8K. It's a nice platform, I'm hoping the demand stays up for these, I'm sure they will land in high school kids hands in a few years.

I paid a pretty premium dollar for my car, finding a black GT with solid black leather was quite a search. I have every single option but the black with solid black was important to me. There were only a few I found and I went with a guy close by but paid a little more then other color combos were going for at the time, hopefully someone will be looking for the same when I sell mine, I guess it has a little exclusiveness haha.

Doesn't hurt to have a rare combo when you go to sell it. Someone with your same taste will ****** it up. Do you have enough money put back to buy you a beater?

I thought about a beater but that means, taxes, tags, inspection, emissions, and insurance. I pay $220 a month now (not the greatest "driving record") so I'm guessing it would be a little over $300 with a second car. I don't have a few thousand laying around to get something decent. I might try to pick something up if I found a steal, but to be honest I don't really look around much. I don't want a POS, but I'd take like a civic hatch, miata, or something reliable and good on gas. I'd actually almost be willing to drive a car that wasn't registered and just throw my RX8 plates on it. I drive about 10 miles (one way) to work everyday in traffic, live right off the highway and work right off. I've seen a cop maybe once. Anyone know what kind of trouble one could get in? I honestly don't think I'd ever get caught and there isn't a chance for an accident.

I keep most of my money in some 6-18 month investments so I don't have a lot of cash laying around to spend.

it's also winter and each winter we see people taking a hit compared to what they would if they sold in the spring. plus i don't know that they ever really held their value that much since the beginning. just enjoy it and don't think about what it's going to be like when you have to resell.

how is he getting a loaded GT that much below invoice?? you mean below MSRP of INVOICE?? this must be some kind of "deal" we can't get...

as to whether RX8s are depreciating a lot - I think the whole car market, along with the economy in general is going down. The housing market is in the toilet. and that is hitting EVERYONE hard. people are hunkering down and no longer using their houses like an ATM to buy toys...their ARMS are resetting and payments on their house are going up. now they can't afford their boxsters, RX8s, S2ks that were all bought as toys.

now they need to unload their toys just to avoid foreclosure.

while the RX8 is a relatively practical sports car, it's still a sports car, and compared to say a honda accord/ toyota camry, Acura TL, etc...it's VERY impractical. when times get tough, people reassess whether they need the sports car or the minivan...guess what stays and what goes.

as a person in the market for a cheap third car, this is all music to my ears. hearing that people are getting 10500 for a trade in, means I stand to score a SWEET deal on a usd 2004 with low miles if I just push push push and make lowball offers.

used rx8s are everywhere.

HOLY SMACK! that's cheap!

the 08 GT my local dealer has, has an invoice around 29, or 30k....

6k under THAT would be 24k for a loaded GT. 07 or 08, who cares. same thing.

does his warranty run from 07 or from teh date it is SOLD? that's a smokin' deal.

no wonder the used 04 05 and 06 models are selling for $hit. you can get a NEW 07 for 24k... or less? what is he actually paying??

i ought to start looking for leftoever 07s!!!

Not AT ALL the same thing - '07 vs. '08, as I have described previously to you...

It's probably too late for you to "start" looking for an '07. There are VERY few, and whatever left are the true oddballs that noone has been able to pawn off on anyone yet. You know the $36k sticker Yellow Automatics and the like. They will have every single port installed accessory, every option, bad colors, and not likely many sticks left. That's what November is for, getting the deal on the correctly equipped car that has been sitting for 90 days, not the oddball that has been sitting for a year.

Mid-range sports cars are like Krispy Kreme glazed donuts. People love them when they are hot and new, but they lose their appeal as they get older. Same with the 8, same with the S2K.

Hi all, I just joined this club looking for some answers about the cheap 2007 models out there. I first thought there were some common problems on the select few cheap 2007 models but form reading this thread I'm guessing the sports cars are taking a big hit and some dealers are trying to get rid of it for the new models.
I've been looking around for a nice rwd and was weighting between the is300, s2k, and the rx8, and I found a brand new 07 base for 21k and I'm pretty much leaning towards it what do you guys think?

Theres also a 07 dark blue shinka for 22k which I really really wanted but its in Tampa and its too far away if anybodys interested.

^^buddy, there is no dark blue shiinka rx8. do grab a brochure at the dealership before you buy a car. its there to inform you, the customer.
don't be a dummy and one to get ripped off when walking into the dealership.

oh, welcome to the club.

i believe 06 or 07 shinka became an option instead of a trim level.

This is the second time in as much as a week someone has had the wool pulled over their eyes regarding the Shinkas. With the market opening up even further, lets hope its not the start of a new car salesman trend....

re: invoice price- don't forget that the invoice price is not actually what the dealer paid- there's all sorts of kickbacks and incentives that more than make up for the huge discounts you're seeing.

And yes, the car market is in the toilet right now. Used is not quite as bad as new, but theres enough competition that margins are getting smaller, which in turn means you're going to get offered a lot less for your trade because everyone's trying to up their margins while still offering the lowest price- it's a vicious circle. Not so great if you're selling your car, but if you're looking to buy, it's a great time.

pardon my color blindness its more like dark purple, burgundy to be exact.
anyways, from what I was told by the dealer for the particular one that I'm planning on getting is that the price is after a dealer rebate of $3500 I'm not sure how much truth is in the dealer's words but from what I've read in different internet articles the factory gives the dealers a rebate inorder for them to sell off the leftover models to make wave for the new. (not exactly sure) and I'm sure they'll try throwing on some fees and other bs once I walk through their doors.

it does suck that the cars are depreciating fast but i'm planning on keeping mine forever

anyhow, thanks for the warm welcome.
