Did i luck out and get TPMS with my 2nd hand tires?

So i have an 04 GT that came with 18'' rims, (im assuming tpms)

i bought 2nd hand rims/tires from a dude that use to own an rx8. He didn't seem all that into cars or anything, so just some middle age guy.

Now i assume that when i'd swap the wheels out, i would have a tpms light due to them not being there.... but no light

is there no light because the system senses them not there and doesnt worry about it, or no light because the tires have the tpms installed?

try letting some air out of one and see if you get the light. they probably have TPMS.

Most likely case is your new rims have the TPMS sensors in them. Can you take a photo of the valve stem? It should look like the one on this sensor.

so he sold tires with tpms already installed. its easy to check - is there a long line of balancing weights on one edge of the rims?

i installed a set of winter tires on my car. it takes about 10-15 minutes for the TPMS light to turn on. and when it does, it blinks. its not solid. what does the blinking mean? i checked the manual, but i didnt see a part on blinking.

if my tires did not have tpms, then the light would turn on instantly.. right?

and if air expands when heated.. shouldnt the light turn on in the first few minutes before the tires heat up?

also, my winter tires are 225/50/17 bridgestone blizzaks. it says on the tire, max pressure = 40psi. i put 35psi (warm) in there, but the light still comes on... what psi should i be shooting for with these tires?

So i let the air out of my tire in the driveway, down to like 18psi... the light didnt come on.

The valve stems don't look "special"

And assuming i have a 2004 GT with sat nav, leather, hid... i would have tpms?

Do you think it was disabled somehow?

Most people seem to complain about the light being on, but im complaining about it being off... :\

Are the TPMS sensors in the wheels uniquely matched to each vehicle, or are they interchangeable from car to car?

actually i just found this which might be helpful:
http://www.finishlineperformance.com...4-04-1374a.pdf

it says that it has batteries designed to last up to 10 years, an accelerometer that turns the unit on at 16mph (25km/h), a temp sensor and a pressure sensor.

So assuming letting the air out of my tire was a waste of time cuz i'd have to drive it...

32 psi cold. Unless there is specific information to the contrary, you inflate tires to the pressures in the owner's manual, or on the sticker in the door jamb.

That 40 psi is the maximum pressure the installer should use to help seat the bead. After the bead is seated, it should be brought back down to 32 psi.

recently had the same issue with my TPMS system as well. Turned out two sensors were going bad and had to have them replaced. A bad sensor will throw a code. Check it out.

Dont think so. A couple months ago got a TPMS light when starting the car first thing in the AM before backing out.

rosenthal has them for $70.

http://www.finishlineperformance.com...n&key=RX081038

to have someone actually do the work ranges from free to $10/each from what i saw. of course that was when my tires were being mounted so i'm not sure what they would charge otherwise.

TPMS are for the timid IMO. Nothing is better than a tire pressure gauge in your pocket. And besides, who wants all those wheel weights that zoom mentioned.

I've been driving around all day on my snow tires which don't have any TPMS sensors in them and I've yet to even see the light come on. I hope it stays off. That beeping noise is annoying.

TPMS in no way replaces a tire pressure guage (and if it does, shame on whoever is doing that). there are, however, times when you have the window open and either because of someone next to you or the echo off a divider, it sounds like a flat tire. almost always it's nothing but being paranoid i would pull over as soon as i could to make sure it wasn't me.

having the TPMS puts that paranoia away for a while and let's me know that if there was something severely wrong i'll get a beep and light. and then checking once a week with a tire pressure guage makes sure that expecially during these winter months when temperatures are crazy, i can keep them at the right pressure all the time.

You have to understand if you have low profile tires on 18's its not as easy to tell if you have a flat or a leak.
