The Mx-5 is a very nice car and the MPG savings is substantial + it scored 2nd place in the latest Car and Driver issue for best handling car under 40k. Ive owned both 8 and Mx-5 and Id gladly own another Miata...totally bulletproof engine longterm, great handling, great looking, holds resale well...and you can get a retractable hardtop which helps with noise and is impervious to theft vs the soft top.

But... He didn't buy an MX-5.

The important thing is he stayed zoom zoom.

The fact that he didnt buy it doesnt change a thing about my post...The Mx5 is long term reliable, great gas mpg, excellent handling car and a great choice for almost anyone. I loved my Mx5.

I would understand your logic if you were going to the ford focus or mazda 3 for the gas savings, the difference between an rx8 and mx5 is about 4mpg combined , hardly worth it, especially the extra you will pay to obtain one ( depending on year ) and taxes you will pay... however its your choice goodluck

p.s you are lucky you're not in canada we pay 5.00bucks a gallon

Almost 5 bucks here in NY for premium;)

Also, I think the MX-5 gets a little better mpg than that.

I love the gas debate. I fell victim to it. I drive 110 miles each day for work. I traded in the 8 for that reason and and I had to drop costs to pay for my divorce. So what did I get? The 32 mpg Hwy Terrain. I love it but it's no 8. And here's the funny part about mpg ratings. My RX-8 was getting 20+ on Hwy at an average speed of 83 mph where as the Terrain was getting 32 at 55 mph and about 24-25 at 80+ mph. The rotary doesn't seem to fall off the mpg curve at high speeds like most pistons do

In the end you can't justify a NEW car for gas. If you downgrade or get a used then yes.

In any case gl and glad you stuck with Mazda.

So true. Buying a new car, with taxes and all the money lost in depreciation....quite a lot of money when compared to gas savings.

Wow, so you used to commute 110 miles everyday. I do not blame you for getting rid off the 8. That's a lot of driving to get to work!!!

Yup and it's mostly empty back highways so I had to get another 8 haha. Going to work became boring without my RX-8.

Now I just pay my gas and consider it a fun car tax.

Yeah I was well aware but I moved from a 10 mile commute daily to a 110 mile.

I'm still in debate over this same change.....might actually pull the plug tomorrow on an 06 GT that has the same feature the rx8 has that i want (advanced keyless, homelink, ipod)

Having owned 2 RX8's and an MX5 the mpg difference is about 10mpg more in the Miata in mixed driving. I averaged no better than 18mpg in mixed driving in the 8 and I averaged about 28mpg in the Miata. I drove about 50% hiway and 50% city in both. Plus the Mx5 has no need of engine replacements/worries about reliability. It also makes a great weekend tracktoy but its obviously smaller than the 8.
