Dealer oil change

I am concerned tonight after checking my oil and more than a little ticked at the dealer and myself. I normally check my oil every 2 - 3 weeks and at that point it is usually around the midpoint between Add and Full. Well, I had the Mazda dealer do an oil change about three and a half weeks ago and I had not checked it until tonight. The level was slightly past the Full mark which REALLY makes me wonder where it was three and a half weeks ago! So I'm ticked at them for over-filling, and ticked at me for not checking the level early on. But the concerned part is just hoping everything is ok. For any of you with experience or knowledge about this, is there any particular thing to be aware of or that I should be watching out for? I guess at this point griping to the dealer is about all I can do, which really won't do anything. I appreciate your help/thoughts.

AFAIK, if your car wasn't acting funny before because of over-filling, and it's still acting fine now then there's nothing to worry about... THIS TIME O.o

The whole system, if completely drained, will yield 7 quarts of oil; two of which are in the oil coolers if you have a Sport or a GT. If you are paranoid, just drain it yourself from the oil plug, otherwise, you can always drive it hard and let the OMP inject the excess to be used up for you. The real concern you should only have if one over fills with oil is the excess oil will go into the Air Intake's accordion tube. If you look closely at the oil fill pipe, there is a hose connecting it and the accordion tube. Ideally, that is where you can install an Oil Catch Can to prevent oil blowing into the Intake.

I bought my car in to this one Mazda dealer. they overfilled my engine oil causing the oil to sucked into the intake. a lot of messy cleaning work they had to do.

My dealer always puts in too much oil. It's usually up to the top of the flat in the dipstick, rather than the top line. Never had a problem. I've got an '06, though, which I understand does not have the oil breather issue Grace and Jason describe.

FWIW, I've never had any gas station or garage fill oil exactly to the line on any car. Ever. They always put in too much. I think they stick to whole numbers of quarts...even when they pump it out of a barrel rather than use cans.

If no issues with the over filling, then your fine...carry on.

1/4 inch higher than top mark is about where I put mine after draining.

I doubt you were over filled badly, but always check any mechanical work like leaks, bolt, and especially oil fill since its so easy.

The guys that had trouble probably had 1/2 quart or more over filled which yours doesnot sound like.

The 8's refill can vary a lot since the cooler might drain different amounts depending on angle of car. The mechanics just put in 4 or 5 quarts when it might need 3.8 quarts.
