The Curse of the Silver Strikes Again

First of all, I'm very thankful to be alive today.

That said, I've just had probably the worst weekend of my life. At about 7:00 yesterday morning, my beautiful silver 8 received severe injuries. I fortunately did not.

I was approaching a red light in the right hand lane at an intersection with two very clearly marked NO TURNS signs (there's a separate lane that you can access about 500 yards from the intersection if you want to make a right hand turn) when the light turned green, so I continued at a normal speed instead of stopping. Next thing I know, a semi that had been stopped at the light starts making an illegal right from the middle lane, right in front of me. I slammed on the brakes, but was too close to stop in time, and slid under his trailer. Needless to say, the 8 is a few inches too tall to fit nicely in the 43 inches of clearance under a normal semi. I think I hit the trailer at about 10-15 MPH (down from about 35-40), and the drivers side roof rail was deflected in about 6 inches from the impact. The windshield, roof, drivers side doors, rear quarter panel, and front drivers side fender probably will all need to be replaced. I got a few cuts from my shower of glass, but other than that I escaped without injury. The airbags did not go off.

So now my 8 is at the body shop until the insurance adjuster comes out on monday, and I'm stuck driving a POS Jeep liberty rental car.

ouch :(

So your accident looked like this?

BunnyGirl 08-20-2006 06:11 PM

 That's terrible. That truck driver's insurance sure will be paying out bigtime!!!

Clavius 08-20-2006 06:13 PM

Should of turned off your Silver8's cloaking device man!

Kidding aside glad your alright man. A semi accident are usualy the worse because of their weight and their nondesire to move when hit. From the sounds of it seems like in the previous post half your car got underneath the semi's trailer, think they'll total it for you or your safe?

pretty much a mirror image, except that I was going straight not turning.

I don't know whether I want them to total it or not. Its been a great car and I think it could be repairable. It already has a brand on the title (recovered theft) so I don't think having body work will significantly decrease the value over what it was already decreased by the brand. For that reason, I'm afraid they'll rape me on value if they total it.

dupa12345 08-20-2006 07:19 PM

so whats the next car .. i recommend a brand new rx8

mysql101 08-20-2006 07:20 PM

If my car was totaled and I still wanted an rx-8, I'd look very closely at the showroom condition turbo'ed rx-8s that are sitting around unsold on the FS section.

Clavius 08-20-2006 07:28 PM

Ouch.. well hopefully they'll let you just repair it. I'd honestly say start shopping around and look for a really good shop. Been hearing to many bad stories about Mazda Body Shop guys (the gods know I'm one of their bad story tellers). If your lucky and you find a good shop they will already have a deal with your insurance company.

Taken any pictures yet? Oh also you atleast get a good rental outa this? That was the one silver lining (no pun I swear) out of my accident a few months back (besides getting my 8) was the rental, got a Buick LaCrosse CXT thing had balls and leather. I'm going to assume the driver was at fault so I'd ask your insurance company how much the other guys insurance company will pay for a rental and get the most out of it like I did. I could of gotten a subcompact but said screw it and went sadan on the rental.

3MTA3 08-20-2006 07:34 PM

Good to hear you're ok. That had to scare the shiat outta you.

I don't know how all states work but when my mom's Tribute was in the shop the other person's insurance had to pay whatever it would cost to get a comparable vehicle during that time frame. Too bad the only thing the rental place had was a Kia Optima. The car went in around Memorial Day time range so everybody was renting out cars. The seats in that thing were worse than sitting on metal folding chairs or hard wooden bleachers!! My poor butt!!! LOL

swerver 08-20-2006 08:50 PM

while its in the shop, PAINT IT A DIFFERENT COLOR!!!...............:)))))

mysql101 08-20-2006 08:52 PM

you can change your stripes, but you'll always be silver on the inside.

Mazdaspeed RX8 ver2 08-21-2006 02:14 AM

sorry for the loss, well, really glad youre alright. yeah, that truck drivers insurance will be paying big time for this. Hope you repair or get another 8 IMO!

Raz0rama 08-21-2006 08:24 AM

I'm getting back in an 8 one way or another! I love this car, and have always had a rotary fondness.

I'll have pics later this evening probably, I've got my camera and I'm going to the shop later today.

Clavius 08-21-2006 09:47 AM

^ Dont cry to much man when taking those pictures she shall be fixed!!

dynamho 08-21-2006 09:48 AM

I'm glad you're okay. That was a close call.

It's totally the truck's fault, but we shouldn't gamble with our lives around semis and buses. We must always expect stupidity on the road when we drive.

It freaks me out when people just hang around by the speed limit right next to a semi, or when people turn outside a semi on the outside of a curve on the expressway, or when people stop right next to a semi at an intersection, especially on their right where they likely cannot see you. On tight roads, semis sometimes NEED to turn from the center lane or they won't have enough clearance.

Dont worry. my warm hugs will make you happy :mdrmed:

dmc27 08-21-2006 10:53 AM

Glad you're ok, bro. Maybe you can you get the new blue for 06. Sharp color. It is NOT availble w/cloaking, so you'll be a bit safer. Good luck.

(dynamho - you're right about the semis needing more room, and people needing to be more aware of blind spots on semis. But re-read - this case was an illegal turn.)

I'm aware of the wide turns, trust me - my brother drives trucks for a living and I've been on the road with him plenty of times. At this intersection he was crossing 2 lanes of straight traffic, making a right turn at an intersection where there was a separate turn lane with a nice arc to it so that truck traffic has no problems on it.

See the diagram.

Was curious about the streets set up. I think the stupid ass truck driver realized he missed the turn and obviously just turned without looking. We have a few intersections like that around here. Well if all else maybe you'll get a decent settlement outa it. Are you hurt btw back or neck?

SayNoToPistons 08-21-2006 11:14 AM

^ No. the dumbass was tryig to make a wide turn and didnt notice the rx8 because he was in his blind spot or the truck driver is a complete dumbass. happens all the time because trucks need a lot of space to turn. have you noticed those "This Vehical makes Wide Turns" in the back of the trcuk/trailer? theres also a pic of the truck turning and hitting a car next to it right under where it saids "This vehical ....". just like his diagram and the pic where th blue rx8 got owned.

Erm.. Pistons.. that is what I said lol.. the diagram shows a special lane to take right turns on the far right which the truck driver missed, hence me stating the truck driver just turned without looking. The truck driver should not of been even attempting a turn anyways. Blind spot or not the truck driver should of just went past and found a U-turn spot.

SayNoToPistons 08-21-2006 01:46 PM

DIdnt you say he MISSED a turn?...

Clavius 08-21-2006 03:16 PM

^ Yes the Truck driver missed the earlier turn off so he could take his right handed turn legaly. Where the truck driver took his turn it was illegal, being in the trucks blind spot is overall a mute point to the accident since the truck driver shouldnt of been attempting this turn at the time. Overall I'm just happy this guy isnt severly hurt as I stated in one of my orginal post's.. those semi's dont like to be moved by our lil cars.

dynamho 08-21-2006 04:42 PM

Every driver should try riding a motorcycle or bicycle, not pleasure riding, but commuting, for a year, and learn to get the feeling that they are vulnerable on the road. It'll make wiser drivers.

The law doesn't favor the maimed or the dead.

Anticipate stupidity on the road; laws can't save you from other people's stupidity.

Not me. Some guy sent me a PM hes selling his Turboed winning blue 8 for $50K! I was looking at his list of mods and replyed; "How much do you think you put into your car?" He said $20K. OK not even I could fig out how he got this amount. I mean I did not even pay full price for my 8. Maybe he got a bad deal hooked up the car and wants more back for what he put into it.
But I see your point.
I would say if its just a stock body with Turbo. Then yeah you can mod the rest to your own image.

that guy obviously thinks he deserves what he put into the car but taken the fact the added stress put onto the engine by adding a turbo along with the no warranty and the miles he has put on the car he is overcharging about 30k if anyone pays that much for it i pity them unless hes putting about 500whp down

PaSs1oVeR 08-22-2006 02:50 PM

Just had someone do something very similiar. We get off the interstate for gas/fo0d ... take the right curve to go right. Person in giant suv in the turn left or go straight lane, turns right .. almost t-bones us ... then gives ME! the finger!!!! wtf is wrong with people

Ouch!!! Poor car. Your hood looks okay. :)

Clavius 08-22-2006 07:49 PM

OMFG.. you must of pissed yourself when this accident happened!! I would of atleast shit myself..!!! Damn... and you walked out relitivily fine right? man your lucky!.. I forget did you say if airbags went off or not?

Just damn... seeing how far the damage went just whoah.. !

Raz0rama 08-22-2006 07:56 PM

No airbags.

Also, I think it looks a lot worse than it was. If you look at the overall frame, the only reason everything looks so bad was the impact was high up on the car (right on the roof rail), where there is relatively little structure. just bending that roof rail a little will throw the doors out of whack, and shatter the windows. Then the front fender damage happened almost as an afterthought when the fender hit the U shaped tire rack that hangs down under the side of the trailer.

I didn't pee or crap myself, but I did bleed a little. I've got a half dozen blood spots on my jeans, and a few little (healing nicely) cuts on my hands and legs from the glass. The drivers side window literally exploded in my face. Fortunately I always wear my wraparound sun glasses when driving so I did not get any in my eyes.

Also, I just found out from the shop that the Adjuster decided that it is not totalled. She'll live to see another day! Not sure exactly how happy I am about that, except that at least they're not screwing me on the branded title in paying out for a total. I'm going to ask tomorrow about whether or not I can sue for diminished value from the other company since the accident should be considered the other driver's fault.

shinka213 08-22-2006 09:54 PM

Hey Josh
I had no idea until tonight...Im so glad you are ok.. :grouphug:
I feel for your baby as well.....hope things work out with the insurance, etc
Please stop by the meet even if your 8 is not ready....bring the wife and child...
-P

AdRoCK3217 08-22-2006 10:26 PM

Get them to total the car! When no one is looking, take a hatchet and fuck the frame up under the car. :-)

At least..thats MY plan if I ever have a resale-shattering collision. That, and roll out of the car, and sue, sue, sue.

BoosTED 08-28-2006 07:04 AM

Ahhh  that is hard to look at.

Good to hear you didn't get hurt bad.

Reinforces that we have a safe car.

:D:

This is another heart aching pic: http://www.automagazin.hu/szamok/2004/09/1190006.jpg

So if all the cars were silver on the track would it be a demolition derby? :scared:

The one even tried to mask the silver with all the red over the top...

DOMINION 08-28-2006 07:17 AM

Raz0rama
That made me think back when I got hit by the taxi. This Oct will be 1 year. Good to know you'll be ok on the out side.

Aseras 08-28-2006 07:58 AM

i think you adjuster will be surprised when the shop keeps asking for more and more money to fix it and then it does get totalled.

BoosTED 08-28-2006 08:58 AM

If non the of the airbags went off that saves but that looks like considerable body damage.

2 doors, more than likely a new speaker for the door, front fender, a roof, new windshield, side glass, front headlight, work straightening out the rear driver's side sail and paint.

Body parts are not that bad to replace.

Raz0rama 09-07-2006 11:09 PM

1 Attachment(s)
Well I got the estimate: 9861.00 and thats allowing for two used doors to replace the damaged ones. My body shop is trying to get them to rewrite it for new doors because he doesn't think they'll get decent used ones. Also, my body guy says he'll work with me on getting a custom paint job out of this: here's an Idea I'm working on:

Would you use that same kinda periwinkle-ish color? I really like it if you do. :)

sucks to see that hope they fix it better than what u had it

RotoRocket 09-07-2006 11:52 PM

The Jeep Liberty is not a POS.

It's reliable, stout, solid, actually has a comfortable ride, the A/C will freeze you out, and gets better mpg the what many 8 owners get.

I miss my Liberty.

Hah. I got 14mpg compared to my recent average of 18mpg in the 8, the thing steered like a boat and had severe steering drift (you could turn the wheel about 1/2 an inch either way before it grabbed, and when it did, it was eratic) and it bounced to high heaven whenever you hit a bump.

BunnyGirl 09-08-2006 12:27 AM

Sounds like fun.

allmotorRX8 09-08-2006 12:44 AM

i would pass on the custom paint job like that idea that you have.... IMO, its gonna start lookin like pimp my ride.... that trucking company is gonna get it, u should sue them.... hahaha, they've got big pockets
