Unhappy Crack in Windsheild..

I was just driving down the highway today...It is rather bumpy..I take a look over to my right and there it is..a nice lil backwards L shaped crack on the passenger side of my windsheild..I figure it had to be from the bumps on the road.. Now for my question, is this covered by the warranty?.. If not, how much am I lookin at in repair?..Thanks for the help.

Edit: From what I can see it was caused only by stress, there are no idications of any road debris hitting the windsheild.

no luck with the warranty folks, and the windshield is probably not available from anyone but the dealer. I have already had mine replaced once, it wasn't any fun for me or my wallet.

mine was just replaced and was covered by my insurance. I would hope you would spring the extra $1 a month on full glass coverage on a brand-spanking new car....

RIGHT?

If you have state farm ins. it is covered w/ out a deductible. (my wife had two replaced last year on her Toyota) Others have to have a rider for coverage.. Bummer!

ONLY in Florida, because of state law. I have been with State Farm for 20 years, and have ALWAYS had to pay the $200 deductible, and there are no full coverage "riders" available in Texas.

I wish Texas would pass a similar law - I had three windshields in the Miata in 4 years.....

Okay, I have some experience with this. I also had a crack appear in my windshield. It appeared on the passenger side and was about 1 foot long. The replacement of my windshield was covered under warranty. The reason it was covered under warranty was that there were no chips from rocks to be found in the windshield yet there was this crack which stretched from the seal towards the center. One of the techs from the service department felt along the crack to see if he could feel any chips that weren't visible and he could not locate one. This basically meant either the windshield cracked from a small crack that was there previous to it being placed in the car or the vast changes in temperature in this particular area a few months back caused it. What it works out to is have them prove that it was a rock. If they cant then you may have a valid warranty claim.

*sigh*

I just went out to my car and saw this odd looking dust around the stereo (very glinty). Looking for what the problem was, I found right at the edge of the windshield at the top a large pock of missing glass. Almost as if you got hit with a rock, but it didnt happen on the road, for sure, and there is not a mark on the outside of the glass. This is along the top black edge of the glass (BTW, it's black glass, not some sort of sticker).

ARGH. I'm gonna have to go by the dealer early tomorrow and see what they say. It BETER be under warranty.

Unhappy

I had a similar problem recently. A small, star shaped crack appeared right behind my rear view mirror. I don't recall hearing a rock hit the windshield. Within about two days, the crack has spread so that two lines ran to the top of the windshield and another went about two feet across the driver's side. I had it replaced without thinking it might be a warranty issue. Had to pay $200 deductible with State Farm (Georgia). They told me they would repair for free but the deductible applied if the windshield had to be replaced.

Cant you get little cracks filled in at a place like Apple Auto glass? they do stuff like that.

Shouldn't cost much at all, all I know is to make sure you fix it before the crack gets bigger.

cheers

Yeah, I waited too long but it only took a day or two for it to get to the point that the quick fix would work.

I'm taking mine in tomorrow. It should be under warranty. I parked it in the garage at work (no crack) and when I got off work I noticed a line running from the seam at the passenger side and traveling towards the middle for about 10-12 inches. From inside my car it looked like a 1/8 inch ribbon was laid on top of the windshield. It did not look like a crack, it looked like a rub mark, or like someone had took a white grease pencil to it. When I got home I checked from outside the car and it is definately a crack. I'll post again tomorrow after the dealer looks at it.

Rock just got me today on the Mass Pike West near Palmer. Now my issues. Apparently since our car is so new, and I have the auto dimming mirror (I think most people do), it is some sort of special windshield that no reg auto glass supplier seems to carry. They are also saying it requires a "molding" which has to be ordered straight from Mazda. I have one place in Manchester, NH saying they found somewhere with all the parts included in the kit. Hopefully I am getting it done tomorrow. My luck this would happen right before Rev-it-Up weekend

Same thing happened to me on my Toyota truck. A backwards L shape right behind the rear-view mirror, and I know I didn't hit a rock. I was washing my truck and it was not there, I know I woulda noticed it, then after I was done the next time I got in to drive I saw the crack. I haven't bothered replacing it because its just my truck, i'll wait and see if the crack gets bigger.

I hope it doesn't happen to my Mazda

Follow up to the above. Took it to my dealer, they said see this chip at one end of the crack, no warranty. Called my insurance co (Country) , I do not have a special glass deductable (IIRC State Farm has this), after reading the quotes here I went through the process of filing a claim. They came back and said the Glass lists for $402, $50 to install, and $26 for sealant kit, for a total of $476 which is below my deductable. I'm waiting to hear back from the glass shop to verify this price.

My got cracked by a rock chip in January about 3 weeks after I bought it. The dealership was able to find where the rock hit so not covered under warranty. But I will wait until September when my safety inspection expires before I replace just in case I have the same luck. Will replace sooner the crack spreads too far.

IF you have State Farm and carry a 0 dollar deductible on your comprehensive coverage, it can be replaced with no Out of pocket expense. Some people carry a deductible on comp and this is why they have to pay. A 0 (or full comp) deductible is worth the extra couple of bucks. I pay many claims out of my office being a SF Agent and believe me, it's worth it.

Got mine replaced on Friday. I got a PPG windshield also. Insurance covered it with $0 deductible. These windshields are hard to find. I agree with kellybrf, I think it's clearer than OEM.

Another follow up. I got tired of waiting to hear from the original shop I called. So I called Safelight or Safelite, and was given a quote for about $715. I called my insurance glass people back and told this, they said that shop is in the network, (the first one was not) and she would turn the info in and someone would be in touch. That was Friday and did not hear back yet. Safelite said it was PPG glass, the $715 price was the network price and the msrp was much higher. IIRC around $1600?

when i tried safelite they first quoted me around $650ish, then broguht it down to like $600 when i gave them a place w/a cheaper quote. the local safelite guy called back about an hour later and said the only glass they could get was oem and that it would be around $800.

if its ppg i wouldnt pay more than $375, as thats what i got it for

I'm in the same boat with the cracked glass. My dumbass didn't repair a chip with a small crack in it in a timely fashion, now I have a huge 2 foot crack starting at the lower left hand corner. USAA auto insurance doesn't have glass coverage and I need to find a autoglass shop that will replace it. I think the dealer charges something like $700 for a replacement. This sucks!
