Interestingly, you don't see a MAJOR (as in 2x or 3x) cost savings unless you swap from a car like the 8 to a car like a Prius.
Swapping to an Accord or a Fusion or Passat doesn't really move the needle as much as you'd think.

The cost to drive a Prius 25 miles is $1.96; the RX8? $5.33

A comparison of a Prius to an RX8 is akin to bike to a car. Sports cars are bought for the sheer joy of driving. The Prius is bought for practicality or to save the planet. I am keeping the 8. I like to drive!

Cost to drive a Prius: 10 years off your lifespan due to constant tree-hugging, global warming, mother-earth is gonna get us back type pessimism and an overall **** retentive demeanor.
Cost to drive an RX-8: The cash for fuel that you can't take with you when you die anyway.

The prius is actually more harmfull to the environment then a RX-8. How do you think they make those batteries? What chemicals do you thibng are used to make them? I'm sure the chemicals are disposed of properly OH, not to mention how to dispose the batteries. I had an article that compared the environmental impact of a Prius in its lifetime (including manufacturing and disposal) and a Hummer. The prius was marginaly less harmful.

I just read a recent NY Times article about possible side affects from electromagnetic radiation from driving hybrids. There are groups out there that claim there are some serious health risks with hybrids.
But yeah....my RX8 burns through gas like it's going out of style. I spent $55 on my last fill up.

Soon I have to ride a bike, I can afford it, but its not worth it.

As someone that owns both an 8 and a Prius I can tell you there is a significant savings in driving the Prius. My wife drives 4 times the distance I do each week and fills up every 2 weeks in the Prius. She is burning 4.9 liters per 100K I on the other hand fill up once a week and burn 16 liters per 100k.
It cost her $60 to fill up, it cost me $78.
Not sure about saving the environment but the bank account is a hell of a lot happier about it. She was driving a Toyota SUV Kluger which is a Highlander over there in the US and it was burning through about the same as the 8 was each week.

prius is a good vehicle for people who want to feel good about doing something for the environment but not actually doing squat.
You're better off getting something like the 2009 honda accord diesel. Better fuel economy and no heavy batts to lug around.
anyone who bought a rx8 for fuel economy is dumber than a box of rocks.

I think most of the hybrid owners would be quite put-off if they realized that it took more fuel oil to ship the materials used in processing and manufacturing the batteries back and forth across the Pacific than they save by driving the car in the first place.
The whole enviro-transport industry is a shell game. I just need to figure out how to cash in on it like the manufacturers have and still be able to live with myself.

if you want a real eco-friendly car, buy the aptera typ-1. currently its so-cal only.
these 2 cars are also good choices
http://gas2.org/2008/03/03/a-biodies...diesel-hybrid/
http://gas2.org/2008/02/14/germans-r...diesel-anyone/
anyway..
mm: does the rx8 really achieve maximum fuel efficiency at 120mph? i've gotten 24.5mpg @ 65 mph, generally, i average less than that and i drive faster than that.

Expect a big improvement in mileage and environmentally clean hybrids as there is a massive ramp up in lithium cell battery production (and literally 3x the energy per cell than the old lithium cell batteries) to replace the old nickel metal hydride batteries used in many hybrid applications.
Major Japanese companies are making massive capital expenditures right now to open plants that will produce the 3rd evolution of lithiums, which will be better, cleaner, smaller and lighter.
Toyota is shooting for a combined 68 mpg Prius by 2012, and Nissan is getting very aggressive, as well (it licenses its current hybrid systems from Toyota).
P.S. - I get an almost dead nuts 280 mpg per tank in my 05 MT Sport, driven moderately, at about 60% city and 40% highway (ranges from 268 to 287). It's not great, but at 20 mpg, like I said, the only way to see serious savings is to get a hybrid like the Prius or Altima. Many small car owners are disappointed that they're falling far short of their EPA numbers - check out the Volkswagen New Rabbit - it's terrible.

Or you could go for the diesel 5 series (look good at the same time) that beat the prius on a 460 mile trip with some city/hw, sorry to those of you who own them but there is no car i hate more than the prius.
Also, I believe it was on the history channel but in 2100, temperatures are supposed to begin to get colder again...so people will be yelling about a ice age then.
