Very neat info, but the april fool's issue date makes me wonder. Dealers are only getting a $2k markup over invoice? That sounds extremely low. Same goes with all the other options.

yeah, wow... this car is a helluva deal...

When I pre-ordered back in February, the dealer left his invoice sheet on the desk and I was able to sneak a look at it. It didn't have the accessories listed of course, but it had the dealer cost and MSRPs on them, and from what I remember, they pretty much matched the posted sheet here.

this isn't big news...

go to edmunds.com

invoice info has been there for a while... and the info. here is correct. As comparison, the invoice on a base Z (2004) is $25,109 and the MSRP is $26,888... pretty slim margin, about $1800.

Of course they make a boatload of cash on "optioned" models, useless paint protection packages, plus the dealer holdback...

hmmmm... why did I post this again..... oh yeah, the invoice price has been available for a while :D

Also, Dealer holdback will add to the profits for the dealers. This essentially comes from the manufacturer back to the dealer for moving a car within a specified period of time, typically 90 days.

Edmunds has a good explanation of this on their website.

Mazda usually allocates 2% of base MSRP as the dealer holdback. Extra padding for the dealers. Another reason to never pay more than MSRP for a car.

Sadly most of us might have to pay more than MSRP. A car that's hot like this will definitely go in the dealers book as gouge bait. And coming from a place like me where there are only 3 Mazda dealers, it sucks.

Now I'm sure I could get MSRP.. when the dealer is sitting on a bunch of 8s ... late next year :(

red_base 95 04-11-2003 09:02 AM

I hate Gouging!

Fortunately, I have the luxury of several dealers within 100 miles (a distance I'm willing to travel to save even $300). And most are reasonable.

I sincerely wish that gouging won't happen, but it does occur with virtually every new model with high demand and limited supply. If my memory serves correctly, gouging was a regular practice for Miata, PT Cruiser, S2000, Thunderbird, New Beetle, MINI Cooper, and the Z.

Here's hoping that everyone who frequents this board is knowledgable enough to avoid that situation. If you end up paying more than MSRP, you're either unfortunate, or stupid (and maybe both). :p

Good luck to all of us. I haven't pre-ordered, and may have to wait a while longer.

This information is great! I'm actually quite hopefull I'll be able to get a RX8 for below MSRP. Dealers around here haven't yet pre-sold all of their first shipment. So within a month of sale start, below MSRP should be do'able.

Think about it, they can sell a car NOW for a little less money or hope that someone else LATER will buy it for MSRP. Using this invoice information will help me nail a reasonnable price.

And with the RX8 being a relatively high volume car, I don't expectc much gouging. I can kinda see with the Evo or the Sti, but not the RX8.

As far as gouging on the Z-car, wasn't there a plan put in place by Nissan to prevent that? I didn't read anything on how it went. I know the mini was ridiculous. So was the T-bird. And don't get me started on the Evo.

When purchasing the apearance package, wouldn't you have to pay for the install? How much is that worth? I'm guessing that anything that is dealer installed costs more.

The options listed are installed at port and as such the pricing includes install and painting to match (i.e. I doubt Mazda is going to stock rear spoilers in each available color at port...)

eccles 04-11-2003 11:05 AM

One thing to beware of, if you're eager to get your car ASAP: according to my dealer, port-installed options may add one to two weeks to the delivery time. Guess they only have a milited number of trained monkeys at the port. :(

No, I bet they are painted in Japan.
