Coolant temp too low?

today i installed a fan control kit, it turns my fans on high at 185 fahrenheit instead of factory 206.

Before the kit my temps were around 200-210 sometimes climbing towards 220 in traffic. My temps now sit around 180-190 at the most. Thats normal city driving and i was ripping it just a little. Highway cruising might be a little cooler.

Anyways, i was about to order a koyorad radiator with the mishimoto fan shroud but will that make my coolant run too cold? with the early fan trigger plus the rad & new fans i would assume it would drop it even more.

It's thermostat controlled, you can't overcool the coolant. If it gets below 186 the thermostat starts to close reducing flow to the radiator.

you don’t want that fan setup, search FAL 420 instead

I’ll give you some credit though; you figured out something most people on here never do, even though I know you don’t understand why what you did makes a big difference.

I believe there was some testing on the rx7club about mazda's design temps being around 180-200, and overcooling below this range caused a loss in power. Likely directly effects combustion performance and causes incomplete combustion. When I ran my original 8 in the winter up here in NH I had to block off the oil coolers to get the engine at the correct operating temp.

not true, there are reasons to stay above 180 in a street car, but there are reasons to run cooler for all out performance as well.

from RX7Club, hope he’s not giving up too much performance.

I also have a low temp thermostat (It was heat soked alittle @ 168 f for this dyno pull normally its 155ish)

Never had trouble keeping the car at operating temp even in the dead of winter, and I'm a bit more north. The oil coolers are also thermostat controlled.

I don't see how low engine temp could affect combustion. That would imply that combustion is incomplete while the car is warming up too (after you're out of cold start enrichment).

it’s not necessarily incomplete, but don’t forget the ability to play software/pcm programming games and mess with that as much as everything else people mess with when they can …

otherwise somebody could argue anything below 14.7 AFR is incomplete combustion

don’t try that in the performance example above. 😬

he was probably regerring to IAT though, but 165°F coolant temp is fine for performance, don’t forget (you already did) that on a wankel there’s an oil temp component to consider as well.

Guess I forgot to put my thinking and reading cap on

Read into the FAL 420 kit and this looks like the ideal street cooling solution, better rad sealing with a customizable controller, cheaper than an aftermarket rad, shroud, and fan cycle kit. Not sure if OP is willing to uninstall his and get this instead, but it's getting added to my list.
