Convince me NOT to get one.

Decisions decisions! Currently debating whether or not to take the plunge on a new one or just going ahead with a used one. The R3 really caught my eye and I never really bothered to give the 8 another look until I looked at it again via reviews. And it started to grow. And then it plastered itself into my brain and now I'm stuck with a case of "new caritious," gotta have it! There are just so many imperfections with this car as a daily driver/only car (gas mileage, depreciation, getting sand kicked in your face) but I really want to give this a try (ROTARY, BALANCE)... In standard or R3 guise.

But I already have a semi new car, so please! Knock some sense into me! Tell me that this car isn't the personification of guilty desires combined into one! Oh and first post!

The Reverend 02-06-2009 05:22 PM

Once you get it you'll want to mod it a lot...so that's even more $$$. But yeah you should probably get one anyway :D:

laythor 02-06-2009 05:33 PM

unless you're paying cash, don't get another car. Having one semi new car (unless it's paid off) and then adding another new car payment is just about the dumbest thing anyone can do... outside of refi'ing their house to take a vacation.

The RX-8 IS the personification of all guilty desires. Driving it is so sweet that you forget all else. You develop a sociopathic attitude toward the enormous carbon footprint and other environmental damage you're generating. The only reason you don't crush smug Prius owners is because they're simply below your consciousness level.

Hope that helps. :)

You'll be more in debt
You'll be paying more for gas
You'll have a lot of idiots insulting your "Girly car" because it doesn't break 14.0 in the quarter mile
Kids will be stopping next to you at stop lights revving their 4 cylinder civics with huge exhausts wanting to race to the next block
You will have to do a little bit more maintenance to the car to keep it in tip top shape. (Making sure oil is topped off, etc...)

BUT....

You'll have the most fun you can have driving a car
You'll have a unique and sexy car/engine
Your car will have a personality!!

Atilla 02-06-2009 05:38 PM

If you buy the rx8 you will automatically get an STD....

Done

(if that doesn't scare you off, nothing will...)

I was stuck in traffic with no less than 3 smart cars on my right and a civic hybrid in front of me, and other small econoboxes all around. I felt a little guilty... but only for a second ;-)

NightmareX 02-06-2009 05:46 PM

If you got the dough to do it by all means get it. You know you want to. :)

nue 02-06-2009 05:49 PM

Thank you all! I guess nobody is that infatuated with the R3 as I am... And so I'm guessing the standard version will do just as well. Guess that means time to start saving up for that second toy then!

Sorry, in that situation I would be the one feeling smart. Those people around you are missing a massive chunk of enjoyment and fun in life by deluding themselves into thinking that they are smart for buying one of those cars.

Seriously, the only people that are going to be able to convince you to not get one leave the boards after a rant about their particular car's trouble, which is often their own fault. The people that have massive amounts of issues but stick around will generally still tell you that it is worth it.

Financially, if you can pay cash for it or easily handle the car payments, then there isn't any reason not to. Otherwise, don't get one that ends up getting little/no care and contributes to giving the 8 a bad name.

Stenobeth 02-06-2009 05:53 PM

I wanted this car for three and a half years before I got it and kept talking myself out of it... "Noooooo, my Integra is awesome, no need to get an 8." "Noooooo, I have to save more money for retirement, why get a car payment/more insurance cost/more gas cost." "Noooooo, it's too decadent to get a cool car when I should be paying down my mortgage."

I got the car August 29 and every day I say to myself WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO GET THIS CAR???

The only time I didn't feel like I had the coolest car on the road is when I was at a red light next to a Viper. And I swear he was even checking it out. :) And the way I got past the guilt is that I got an '06 and my payments are the same as they were in any car loan I've had. Insurance only went up $25 a month. Gas... well, yeah, that's more than in the Integra.

But still.......... WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO GET THIS CAR?!?!?!!!

Jedi54 02-06-2009 05:59 PM

because having an AWESOME car totally sucks.

Razz1 02-06-2009 06:03 PM

Hold on to what you got.

imput1234 02-06-2009 06:06 PM

Gas mileage sucks, that is the only reason I honestly can think off, but I would still get it.

it does because I'm thinking of getting rid of mine :lol:

Razz1 02-06-2009 06:15 PM

I heard Hockey moms buy the R3.

I wouldn't get one if I were you.

Unless your a Hockey Mom.

nue 02-06-2009 06:56 PM

I'd rather get something that just... Hm. Blends in. Inconspicuously. I'm all for it! 1 vote for R3 then! Here's to hoping Palin gets one.

OSducky 02-06-2009 07:08 PM

lol how about this
This month alone I will be butting close to 2 - 3 grand of my own money into the car ......... and theres another 2 grand being paid by the insurance company

This month alone I am
Replacing Clutch + Flywheel (With aftermarket parts) because the old one blew = $1500
Got hit by someone a couple of weeks ago so thats a $500 deductible to get the body work fixed.
Spent a Grand on a Body kit that is going to cost a grand to paint/install
spend another $500 - $800 because it needs new rotors/brakes on top of everything else.

The question is .......... Do i want to trade it in and get a new car???

The answer is still no, I love this car and will probably keep it for as long as it runs, if not longer =d. There's just something about the car's uniqueness (rotary engine +completely different style from everything else on the road) and the handling ability (it will cost you millions of dollars to say "I have one of the 5 most powerful cars in the world, It only costs me about 30k to say I have one of the 5 best handling cars in the world =D)

I love this car, even if it makes me broke =[

rollerbldes 02-06-2009 07:12 PM

Don't get it.. gas prices are horrible.

..oh.. wait.. no they're not. Ha! ok lets see....

You're probably low on cash and will probably be fired soon because of the current economic conditions. So.. you shouldn't get a new car. Sorry.

robrecht 02-06-2009 07:13 PM

Personally, I wouldn't get an R3. Get a used, low mileage performance package. Save a lot of money and have just as much fun, with more money to spend on mods or to save up for ... The best rotary to buy new will be the next generation 16x n a ligh-weight 2-seat coupe. That's the best use of a rotary. Only buy an FD or a used RX-8 in the meantime if you've got the cash laying around. That's my worthless opinion anyway.

Welcome to the addiction!

nue 02-06-2009 07:23 PM

What the heck is the performance package anyway?

IIRC, in earlier years it was the base model plus the sport package. In later years, they changed the terminology to the sport model with the performance package. On an AT car, the performance package is more important: HID/Xenon/Fog/Stability control with traction control, Fuji torque sensing LSD, 18" wheels, larger front brakes, sport tuned suspension. On the MT cars, which are the only ones to consider, most of this comes with the base or sport model. The only things added with the performance package are the xenon HID, fog lights, and stability/traction control. You don't get any extra performance with the Touring or GT trim. Real performance upgrades have to come aftermarket. Turbo if your serious. Don't waste your money buying new or on an R3--if you want real performance get good FI aftermarket.

arlingtonrx8 02-06-2009 07:37 PM

Buy used or a R3.. Don't get a 2009 without going all the way or else you'll just regret it later. Be happy even it costs a bit more.

Maries8 02-06-2009 07:48 PM

If you haven't already, whatever you do.... DO NOT DRIVE ONE!

Many years ago, we used to half-joke here that you do NOT "test drive" an RX-8...

...unless you bring your checkbook with you.

It doesn't appeal to everyone. But if you're the kind of person it's meant for, once you drive it... there is no escape ;)
