Common repairs for the RX-8: let's get some accurate info

In response to requests, I've added a Common Auto Repairs Database (CARDb) to my site, TrueDelta.com.

Currently it's just possible to add common repairs to the database. When the database has been populated, owners will be asked to report whether or not their car has actually had these problems. So we can find out how common "common repairs" actually are.

My suspicion: usually less common than people think.

The form includes a field for a forum thread URL, so people can be directed here for thorough discussions if there is a thread discussing the repair, and perhaps discover a great site they weren't previously aware of.

if its covered under warranty it should not be included into the database

I will say the most common thing to *Replace* (not repair) is engine oil.

Why is that? Some 04's are out of warranty and the same common problems still happen to them just because they're not covered but potential buyers should still have the right to know what might potentially break on these cars regardless of whose dime it's on.

I bought a used 2004 with 22k miles and have owned the car for little over a year I have had

Repair:
transmission rebuild
both tail lights had water
engine mounts
new starter (hard start)
new battery (hard start)
new spark plugs ( hard start)
parking brake lever
Oil dipstick (milky substance)
AC **** replace

cost = 0

Maintenance:
clutch replaced (35k miles annoyingly early)
front brake pads replaced
8 oil and filter changes
Air filter replace and 1 refresh
cooling system flush
2 wiper blade replaces
normal tire maintenance

cost: about $1000

also new tires: $800

over $4000 dollars in fuel

Repairs Before I bought the car:
AC enhanced
all recalls

The grin one receives as the tach hits 9000 RPMS priceless
I would be glad to join your site add my information to your database

Why was the clutch replaced so early? You were not the first owner? I'm looking to buy an RX-8 at an auction, maybe I should look into that. How much to replace the clutch? I can do the labor.

My research counts clutches if something other than the lining forced the repair. Otherwise, it's a wear item, and you'll find some early failures with any model.

I'll have to search for a thread here on the sun visors unless someone has already added it, sounds like the sort of thing that should be in there.

2005 purchased new 2/06, now has 13,200 miles. Problems:

• slightly squeaky clutch pedal: fixed
• occasionally squeaky sunroof (only over rough roads, only when open): fixed

That's all.

I'm not exactly sure why the clutch was replaced so early. I was the second owner, the tires looked pretty much normal wear for 22k miles but don't know if they were the first set or not. So i couldn't tell anything when i bought the car

pretty much the entire transmission had to be rebuilt so that could have said something. I do know of a couple 2004's that had tranny problems so i have no clue if i was simply an unlucky owner or the previous owner was doing 9k drops or something. Or was simply a really bad driver.

It was 500 parts for the clutch, it was done with the tranny rebuild so labor was included under warranty. I think its probably around 700-1000 depending on the service place.

You should also seperate the issues by year. some issues are no longer found in the newer cars while others are across all the years.

You know, I think it's the same squeaky clutch problem mentioned in this TSB: http://www.finishlineperformance.com...11-06-1724.pdf

Unfortunately, mine started squeaking before the TSB was issued, so the dealer simply lubed the clutch pedal with something. It hasn't squeaked since (over a year now), so I'm cool with that. If it starts squeaking again, I'll bring in the TSB and have them install the revised part.

I think the clutch in my father's 2005 squeaks. It can be annoying. He should probably have this checked out.
