Cool COLD start....

It got cold today.
Real Alberta cold.
C.O.L.D.
Time to check out how the car would start, when left outside overnight.
And did I mention that Mazda forgot to design a block heater?
First picture is when I left it, minus 17*F.
There is 'old yeller' in the background, Acura V6, good for any temp, any time.

Cool Coldddd....

Next is the display as I cranked it over...
You never want to see "-36*F" on your display, it's not good.
-Leather seats like stone, doors won't shut properly, the rubber is now harder than chinese 'rithmetic.
-Handbrake makes a nasty 'plastic cracking' noise, gearshift seems to be lubed with peanut butter. (what is the pour point of GL-4 anyway?)
But a few crankings and she fires up, making all sorts of squeaking and creaking noises, irrelevant really, it's going in the garage whether it likes it or not.

Yeah I hear ya!!

I spent 3 years in Fairbanks, Alaska (from June '83 to June '86) and it regularly dipped below -50F. At least on Ft. Wainwright you had a place to plug your car in at night. I had an '84 Camaro back then and when it got that cold the tires would flat spot, The shocks refused to dampen and the seats were like plywood. The drive to work was an experience in sensory overload! The car was a hoppin and a shaking from the tires and shocks and the seats refused to dampen out any of the bouncing! You needed BOTH hands to steer the car and it was so cold you could actually feel the moisture being pulled from you eyeballs!

Oh and you had to warm up your automatic tranny in neutral (this way the fluid would circulate and warm up) or you ran the risk of cracking the bellhousing or shearing your torque converter which we watched a dumb *** private who would not take anybodys advive literaly do as he dropped his transmission in the parkling lot!

Hey, + or - 36 C. No difference - wimps . Fuel still burns.

I notice lots of cars actually start -easier- when it's this cold, IF they have a REAL battery under the hood. The worst is high humidity and right around the freezing point. Flooding territory.

I park mine outside most of the time and lately it had -20+f. It's cold enough to hear the rotors moving around in the engine. And it's the only time that my engine has backfired since I bought it. Not loud but you could hear it.
