Check Engine Light

My check engine/service engine light just came on. I have about 21,000 miles on my 2005 RX8 and was wondering if anyone else had this happen? Hopefully it's just an oxygen sensor or something simple. Thanks for the feedback!

..its impossible for any of us to know what your check engline light meant. do us all a favor and head over to your dealer and have them pull the code. Its most likely a loose gas cap..

loose gas cap is very often the culprit. Don't bother trying to use a OBDII scanner to pull the code as it will unfortunately not work.

Check your fuel cap.
If you don't tighten the cap enough/correctly the CEL will come on.

Tighten the cap and the light "may" reset.
It takes a few days though (maybe 8-10, depending on how much you drive)

it takes about 3 start up shut down cycles..

Zoom44 says if the light comes on while driving, not likely the gas cap. For me it was (hopefully) a purge valve and a loose hose to the purge valve. Hopefully that has fixed it.

My car's CEL came on while I was driving. Definitely did not go away after 3 start/stop cycles. Turned out to be the loose gas cap. Nothing serious...

I didnt clarify, it will take 3 start stop cycles to auto reset the CEL if the actual cause is no longer present..
