Changed trany/diff fluid, but cannot feel.

I got 04 6spd and got 17000 miles.

I flush it and refill with new fresh tranny and differential fluid today.

But, honesly, I cannot feel any huge difference.

I can just feel little bit of difference from 1 to 2nd gear.

I have read the thred about changing tranny and differential

fluid at DIY room, mot people (actually all people) said they are really

satisfied and can feel huge improvement, but not me.

Is there anyone who feel same to me? like cannot feel any difference?

or anybody know why I cannot feel any improvement? (actually slightly better)

or does it take some more time to feel the improvement?

(after I change it, I drive 25 miles today.)

How is your shifting feeling?

what fluid did you use?

the brand matters a great deal.

CarAndDriver 04-26-2007 11:00 PM

What did you change it with?

Astral 04-26-2007 11:02 PM

I switched to Royal Purple Max Gear and I felt only a minor improvement, mostly when cold. It's still nice, but not a drastic difference like it is for some.

i changed fluids when my car had about 1k miles on it. If I had to give a number, I'd guess something like 10-15% improvement in shift quality. If people are waiting 30k miles before they swap, the change might be more substantial...

royal purple definitely feels better when the tranny is still cold. Not as notchy.

I followed every single steps people said at DIY room.

Redline tranny fluid 1.8 qts for tranny and Redline gear oil 1.4 qts for differencial

Drain old fluid out and fill in with new fluid.

Step by step every single thing.

I do not think I missed any steps or used wrong oil.

Absolutly I changed all washers too.

Is my car really bad?

Any idea?

CarAndDriver 04-26-2007 11:07 PM

I think it just all depends on the car and person. Redline or RP--its certainly better than stock even if you aren't feeling anything through your hand.

Rx-8 TT 04-26-2007 11:14 PM

Oh one more thing.

One of my friends who just got 07 Rx 8 drove my car filled in with new

oil told me that he does not really feel difference between his car and mine.

Slightly better than his car, but not WOW~ feeling.

His car has still factory oil and mine has Redline tranny and diff fluid.

I felt it too.

Too much expectation = too much disappointment

next time you change your oil, try royal purple instead. It will feel just about the same as the redline (I can't tell the difference), but when your car is cold and not yet warmed up, the transmission should still feel smooth with it.

I'm going to chalk these sorts of reports up to the Placebo Effect. I don't even know how you can begin to objectively compare "shifting experience" from one transmission fluid to another. Maybe if you're paying 15% more for Royal Purple, you're going to attribute a 15% better "feel" after a fluid change. Regardless, most of what you're getting from a tranny fluid change is "behind the scenes" action. Your transmission's long-term life will thank you, but you aren't going to get superman-style shifting action out of nowhere.

Try RP next. Like others said, the cold performance seems to be better.

Astral 04-27-2007 01:19 AM

I found cold performance to be better, but only somewhat. With RP, it was less resistance, but same cold grinds, so to speak (if you shift too fast when cold). So overall, with RP, it feels like the tranny is "slicker" overall, but not butter smooth still when cold.

nycgps 04-27-2007 02:02 AM

I still remember when I had stock stuff, my tranny felt like crap when shifting cold. I hate that horrible grinding feeling.

changed to RP, no problems since.
