car blown up?it was on fire....help
I have a 2005 rx8 gt w/4000miles, and just changed my oil. After driving back from city(100 miles) trouble free I shut down the car for 30 minutes. After starting it had very little power/sluggish and didint idle. After making it to the parking lot (3 minutes away) i noticed smoke from under the car. The catylitic converter was WHITE hot and there were flames toward the rear of the car(car turned off). I called the fire department because a school was near and didnt want any kids getting hurt from a crazy explosion or something. It was towed to a local garage and is waiting for the dealer to pick it up. Do you guys have any idea what is wrong with my car? Please help I hope my baby is okay lol

Sounds like a clogged cat. Did you ever flood it?

catalytic converter was clogged up. The engine should be okay, the dealership will replace the part.
Sorry to hear that happened to you but you should be all fixed soon.

okay i hope its okay, it was towed to the dealer this morning and will wait till monday for the service department to open. yah it only has 4k miles. It was not a daily driver when i bought it a month ago lol, it just was sitting in a climate controlled garage. I wish my house had a heating/ac system like the garage did lol. I dont understand why the cat would clog though, its almost brand new. What causes it to clog, it ran fine for the trip home but after starting it up 30min later it was all messed up.

Years ago, back when cars had carburetors, my boss's car caught fire from an overheated cat. The problem was a defect in the carburetor that dumped excess fuel into the cat. Stoked it nicely.
Can something like that happen with a modern fuel injection system like the 8 has?

It can happen if you have a car that does nothing but short drives and always runs rich-rich. So a five year old with 4k miles (and floods)of carbon built up, then gets a real warm up breaks loose. My guess...and Sea foam is available at Wallmart.

If thats the case what can i do to clean the carbon off other than redlining it once and a while? Is there a additive I can use with the fuel, I bet i have seen some but cant remember.
