Can't play MP3 CDs in OEM CD player?

According to the manual, I should be able to play CDs with MP3s in the OEM 6-disc changer.

The CDs load without any error, but don't play (and, yes, the changer plays audio CDs fine).

I burnt the CDs with iTunes. Anyone have any experience with this? Is iTunes incompatible with the Mazda CD player?

(ps - if this should be posted in a different forum, please advise)

there are different radios that you can have, the manual just covers them all.

Its either the single disc cd, 6 disc changer, single disc with MP3. (correct me if i'm wrong)

You can get an ipod attachment also.

I didn't know that we could play mp3's in the oem player... i also didn't browse the manual though.

Usually if the deck will play mp3's, you'll see a little mp3 thing somewhere near where you put the CD in...

and yes, i know, this post doesn't really help... sorry!

So can anyone tell me how to find out if my OEM CD player is MP3 compatible?

The thought that it would have an MP3 logo on it is not necessarily true - I own 2 cars that do play MP3 CDs, a Chevy Aveo that does have the logo right on the player, and a Corvette that has a compatible 6-disc changer but does not have the logo.

Thanks . . . Stu

normally if your 8's OEM radio will play mp3s, it will say on the face plate there. If it's not playing mp3 on a cd, it's not going to play them.

Never fear, Jedi is here!

There are 3 different version (as mentioned above) Single Disc, 6 disc, and MP3.
As far as I know, no RX-8's in the US came equipped with the mp3 version as it is a dealer option.
I swapped out my single disc for the mp3 and added the face plate.

Unhappy Thanks folks!

Not really the answer I wanted, but at least I know. (I guess I'll need to go with old plug-in0-the-iPod solution.)

Thanks . . . Stu

it's not all bad Stu; you learned something new about your car and besides...I'm pretty sure the ipod hookup is cheaper then the mp3 disc player.

Hey, I'm not complaining, it would have been a bonus if it did play MP3s!

If my car didn't have the ipod interface already in it when I bought it, I was still be using cds.

I liked the mp3s from cd in my cobalt. It was great and cheap. Sadly I broke down and bought a used 2gb nano....I felt so dirty. Luckly it's hidden in the glove box all the time.

I just burn a few albums onto each mp3 CD and I've got music to last me a few weeks.

I have this same problem. I'll burn a new CD, put it in the 6 disc changer, and i can hear the cd just spinning, but no music and eventually a sign on the dash comes on saying "CHECK CD" and it will eject the CD. Yet, on some days it works fine. I asked the dealer and even called Mazda North America and they said the problem is that Burned CD's (CD-R) are thicker than actual CD's that you would get when you buy an actual album. I actually didn't believe it until i put an actual CD next to a CD-R CD and it really is thicker. i've come to deal with it.

I still use custom-burned CDs in the 8 since my 05 does not have an iPod kit.

My CD player does not play Mp3's. The worst part is the LOAD button that fooled me into thinking I had a 6-disk. But no. I am going to make a carputer and have it all, **** it.

My MP3 player plays CDs, CD-R and CD-RW with no problems - either CD or MP3 format.

That sucks. Functionality that you can't even use. Try a different brand of CDR and some other regular discs. If it doesn't play regular CDs take it to the dealer.

the first thing i did when i got my 8 back in '04 was remove and sell the 6 disc changer and replace it with the MP3 single. the MP3 disc stored a hell of alot more songs than 6 normal discs anyway.
