You really need to prep the cover. It has an oily substance coating the top.

yes...engine cover doesn't get that hot
many have painted it...but really you need a vinyl pigment dye paint...regular paint may chip/crack or warp
pigment dye paint (like G2) impregnates the plastic with color and so there is no paint to breakdown
here it is: http://www.mazdaparts.com/ProductDet...001-1115703387
you may need a special catalyst chemical to prep the vinyl before painting (since it is a hard plastic)...if you want more info I can find it for you, here is the product:

Take truemagellen's advice, get the G2.it's far better for what you want to do with it.
The color will never rub or scratch off. Sure it's a littler more to spend but it's well worth it.

[QUOTE=alleycatinheaven]OK, so how'd you keep the grey/chrome lettering on the engine lid?[/QUOT
are you planning to paint the entire cover. you need to leave some of it black IMHO. heres a look at mine.

CGRX8 - What paint did you use? I went out to the MazdaParts website and they don;t offer 'green' and since I have a 'green' that's what I want to use.
Any other tricks/tips?
By the way - GREAT JOB! It looks good.

Morgan and alleycat
ok to alleycat. I didn't tape off the lettering, it seemed like alot of work. I painted the cover yellow, including the lettering and repainted the top of the lettering silver. I used high heat spray ( up to 500 degree's), so there's no question of bubbling. A couple of coats of clear coat high temp and it was done...
Morgan, I didn't paint the air box for 2 reasons. It's a pain in the *** to remove and second, I didn't want to much yellow in the bay. I want some black to offset it. If you noticed the pic of my bay you'll see that I only painted the tops of those covers yellow with the sides painted black, then clear coated. Too much yellow would have looked out of place...

"The Paint I Used For The Engine Covers Was A "plasti-kate" Import Color Touch Up Spray Paint. I Got It At Pepboys And It Cost $3.50/6 Oz.can (i Needed 2). ALL I DID WASS WASH THE COVERS THOROUGHLY AND LET DRY. THEN I TAPED OFF ALL THE SMOOTH PLASTIC WITH MASKINGTAPE. I APPLIED 2 COATS AND IT DRIED ALMOST RIGHT AWAY. ALL IN ALL IT TOOK ABOUT 2 HRS AND COST 7 BUCKS. It Says It Is For Touch Ups??????(i Would Never Use It For That. I Wanted To Go With A Contrasting Color Like Silver Or Yellow But This One Said Mazda On The Cap And Seemed To Match The Car Exactly. It Looks Lighter In The Picture Because Of The Sun But When Held Next ToTHE CAR They Are 100% Matched. Here Are Some Pic Of The Can"
