i know this thread's prolly a waste of space and irrelevant, but c'mon people no one bought this car for the mileage, you bought this car as a speedy car that is like superglue in the curves. If i wanted a car with great mileage id be driving a civic hybrid...

i bought this car specifically as a toy, not as a practical car, specifically because im fed up with 4 cylinder sedans and coupes. i dont care paying 30 bucks every 3-5 days for gas...thats fine, its a fast car it eats gas...period. This car puts a smile on my face every day, and even though im only getting 13-14 mpg i dont care, i live for the speed i live for the curves, who cares how much it costs to get that smile every day...its fun...thats it!

im just confused about seeing a new gas mileage thread every day...its kinda annoying

 

I'm glad you asked. I'm getting 16-17 mpg currently.

 

I agree that mileage is interesting from a technical point of view, but that's it.

Gas is probably never gonna be cheaper than today - so this is the best moment to drive this car, isn't it?

Yes, in my recent first 11 days with my RX-8 I blew 440 € on gas, driving 3200 km, so what? It takes tons of discipline to stay at my desk at this moment - instead of going for a quick ride on the (probably empty) Autobahn.

I love this car and don't regret a single cent I spent on gas driving it, period.

 

If the posts and/or threads annoy you- ignore them. People post what is important to them. Take a look at lounge posts. Totally irrelevant to running an 8- but they are friends rapping with one another. If that troulbles you, its your problem not theirs.

 

I agree with your argument of 'it doesn't matter anyway - it's a nice car so have fun". Still much as we may want this boards' members to have Cyborg-like collective knowledge, they don't quite yet.

So I can understand people expressing, yelling, or wanting to learn about mileage, driving style, and such or offering their experiences. The light of day here can correct mis-understandings, and spark others imaginations. In the end, even if sometimes annoying, every car-related thread gives the board a little more 'collective knowledge' to ponder.

The gas mileage WAS a consideration. Was I expecting 45 mpg on the highway? No.

I was, however, excepting to get CLOSE to the reported mpg on the window sticker.

For the automatic, it listed the city mpg to be 18. I get about 13 mpg.

 

i guess its just sometimes it seems as if a lot of people are missing the point of this car...i'll talk about driving and handling till the end of time, but i really could care less if the car gets 15mpg rather than 18; or the horsepower is overstated...these things meant nothing in the showroom...this car is about passion, not about practicality...i would just rather see more threads about the passion then about the mileage, especially when some are considering a different car simply because of the mileage

 

i guess you just don't see this car the same way...i imagine a lot of people see it my way as well and i believe that its a topic worth discussing...if you really have a problem with my thread take it up with me personally and i'll talk to you about what i think having a performance machine is really about.

Yeah... the hp rating is just a number. It really doesn't matter if it was listed at 650, or 120. The car performs like the car performs, and I bought it because of the way it performed. If I felt it was too weak, I'd have moved on to another type of car. If the car was listed at 87 hp, I would likely have still bought it if it had performed the same way it did during my first test drives.

 

But that is a good thing... if mileage is important to those considering the car and they choose another, well... that's one less person to post about mileage on here, right?

I'm a little concerned with the cost of fuel, am I going to trade in the car, NO... would I have bought it if the sticker had more realistic numbers... I don't know... I did see the posts here about mileage so I did have some warning....but there is a good chance I wouldn't have bought it.... I've never owned a car where I couldn't meet the window sticker. So far with mostly highway driving I average 18-19 mpg. I don't drive my car hard. People should know these things so when they buy the car they will not be surprised.

Since the car had to replace my Honda Civic, gas mileage was a significant consideration to me, as was the insurance cost and whether my family would be comfortable in the passenger and back seats. I expected the car to get something in the mid-20s, based on the following quote from sales materials given to me by the dealer and his emphasis on the small, light-weight engine:

"Mazda has dealt with the emissions issue -- it already meets the 2005 EURO 4 requirements -- and has seen to it that the same vehicle can achieve a respectable 8.3L/100km (34mpg)."

The fact is, the car is a pig on gas and I'm glad I'm not one of the people reporting 13mpg -- in which case I would have sold the car. I'm getting close to 19mpg and am disappointed in that, but very happy with the car in general. Details are in the sig below...

 

All of you are getting 15+ MPG, i WISH i was getting that! im averaging 10.8, would that # be OK with you?

I get about 15mpg in the city.. with alot of stop and go.. I get alot better on the highway.. 19/20..

I've never gotten anything close to sticker mileage on any car id ever owned..

Like someone said, if you don't like to read the threads.. don't... this is the first MPG thread i've read in a while.. and if it pops it's upgly head up in other threads , I tend to ignore those too..

Well, a short calculation tells me that my average is somewhat below 10l/ 100 km. My dealer told me that would be almost impossible given the fact that reving the car is outright fun. Which I agreed to.

I reved it. I drove fast (150 mph) with it. OK, 60% of the time I drove like I should to minimize mileage (I don't have much choice on my way to work), but in fact I'm rather surprised it didn't consume the (at least) expected 12l / 100km.

You just don't get 231 hp for no gas, if you use them from time to time.

 

Nice log. Your results look very representative to me from my experiences. You must not do long trips much as you don't have many 20+ tanks.

It's all in the expectations. Mine were just about what I get. I owned an RX-2 many moons ago, and these #s are much improved over that, and that was nowhere near as powerful and refined as the 8. So I found mileage to be just about spot on w/my expectations.

The problem is going to come when I sell my Honda and start driving the car 5 miles twice a day, back and forth to the train station. Of course, I won't be filling up very much then, so it won't matter very much. The point of the mileage log is simply to assure myself that the car is running consistently over time and is comparable to what others are experiencing. I also wanted to see what dropping the Octane would do, and it seems like using 89 has been fine. I think new owners can expect about what I'm getting, a bit better with lots of highway driving, a bit worse with lots of short commutes.

I have yet to complain about the gas mileage, but I an see why people are pissed. If the number on the window said: City 14 Highway 20, then NO one here would be complaining. You at least would know what your getting yourself into when you bought the car. The point is, Mazda just pulled the MPG numbers out of their ***. You simply CANNOT get the observed MPG even when driving as conservative as possible. I think this bothers a lot of people because they have a strict budget.

I say, let them be pissed and make threads, maybe mazda will try and make their cars get the better gas milage than cars with 2x's the horsepower and 4x's larger engines.

Don't get me wrong I love the car and by no means did I think I was getting an econo-box. But I'm getting 10 mpg. I'm no where near Mazda's numbers. I don't know how they got that number unless the flinstoned their a$$ in the car. But when my 2900 lb car get the same gas milage as an H2.....there's something wrong.

 

The numbers on the sticker are not Mazda's numbers... they are the U.S. Government's numbers. Those are the results of the test that Mazda was mandated to use in testing the fuel economy, and those are the numbers that U.S. law requires Mazda to use in describing the 8.

 

So there not mazda's numbers, but mazda did the testing for the MPG? So how are those numbers not Mazda's? The U.S. government requires that the numbers be posted. They may even go as far as designing the testing for MPG figures. Maybe the MPG numbers are picked by an offical playing Keno in Vegas.

 

then there is something seriously wrong with the method the gov is using or the rx8 mazda provided!
