An automatic 8 can by a little shift to the side become a hand or paddle controlled stick shift - you just don't need to worry about the fancy footwork - You lose a little HP, but there is still sufficent for passing and pulling uphill....

As Mom puts it "Don't rev your engine at me, young man!"

I see your butt, so I suppose you are thinking with it! Else you would know better than to accuse a little ol lady of being a liar...

Please look carefully at automatic 8s, you will see paddles on the steering wheels - Now what do you think those paddles are for? They are for shifting up and down as the driver desires. Look at the stick, note there is a small grove in which the stick can be set, it has a plus and minus sign. What do you think the plus and minus mean - they mean that you can shift up and down with the stick, as the driver desires.

When can you use this? You can use this when you are at a light, to approach the red line on the rotar, up shift, and go like a bat out of Christmas, as the driver so desires!

Now, if you have an automatic, and you are not getting the speed you think you need, ( and we assume you have your car well tuned) you may need to practice a little - you need to get your rotations up before you change gears. If you are at full rotation and you still don't have power, back off the gas a little, let the engine find a steady speed point at a lower rev, then push it up again! With a little practice you can get speed and then get more speed! If you just tromp on it like a troll you will only get half the speed it's capable of, then little old ladies will pass you and they will laugh as they pass you!

I've only seen three 8's in may area over the past 6 months since I've owned mine.

Black (like mine): Guy
Silver: Guy
Red: Woman

Think there are any color standards for guys or girls... like more guys going with one color and vice versa??

What I want to know is why would you even get a car like this in automatic? It's almost as bad as an automatic jeep. If yah can't drive stick, there are civics and corollas.

Female 8 driver in WV and I'm guessing my color choice does not click with the "guy color" "girl color" at all.

His name is Rex. He's an 04 MT, sport package with nav. Completely stock - I added the spoiler and the rotary accents. Will tint my windows at some point.

Another one with a view about the AT.
Look another one who needs to see a shrink about this PHOBIA towards the AT.
I don't understand why a person cannot buy the car of his/her choice without being critisized by his fellow MAZDA RX-8 owners.
Let me guess,,, do you have an RX-8?
And let me guess ,,it has a Manual Transmission?
Well my god you own an RX-8. Congratulations ,,nice car.
But that manual transmission sucks! Go buy yourself a 1976 Volkswagon Bus so you can shift gears.
Man that sounded almost as stupid as your comment,,, did it not?
Some peoples kids,,,

THE MANUAL TRANSMISSION SUCKS????

WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING IN AN 8? WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING ON THIS SITE?

"The six-speed manual version of Mazda's RENESIS rotary-powered RX-8 gets more power than the automatic version, and comes standard with sports suspension. The 238 hp manual costs $1500 more than the 197 hp automatic."

AND WORTH EVERY PENNY! I'LL RACE YOUR LAME AT ANYTIME. THEN WE'LL SEE WHO SUCKS.

I think we're all agreed that this is a performance automobile. In plainer terms, it's a sports car, a sports car to the max, built for high-revving and quickness in handling. This car was designed strictly for hard-core driving enthusiasts... period. Mazda put out a few units of the RX8 in AT simply to cover a tiny percentage of the consumer base who can't drive a stick but have to have this ultra-sexy car anyway. Hell, I've even seen a few Mini's in auto (equally lame). Anyone who has driven stick knows that driving manual demands far more skill and attention to what's going on than automatics.

Driving stick is a far more interactive experience that requires a bit of practice to master, but the payoff is far greater control over the vehicle (deeper dimensions of control)... as in strategic downshifting for greater torque on curves. The art of the downshift also accounts for the boost of power that comes in mighty handy for situations like passing Porsche Boxters, BMW's, and eighteen wheelers in a short distance of road space. This is called technique. I've driven lotsa automatics and I will say that they are great when you're enjoying that big mac and coke or when you're fighting with your unruly kids in the backseat on the way to the mall, just press the pedal and go...mindless driving. The automatic transmission is an invitation to disaster. With a stick, you have to use both hands, both feet... this requires far more attention and results in greater presence of mind while driving...The act of driving, which is, when one thinks about it, a potentially deadly situation.

I'm with the Germans when it comes to driving. Driving should be taken way more seriously than the vast majority of Americans take it. They hand out driver's licenses to anyone with a pulse in this country. Everyone should be required to demonstrate mastery over the manual transmission before being allowed to drive. This would cut down drastically the number of incompetent drivers on the road who get the gas and the brake mixed up. The rate of accidents would go down, and there would be more road for the skilled stick drivers who have earned the right to a license.

Last but not least, going back to the fact that the RX series are and have always been hard-core sports cars, when was the last time you saw racing cars on the professional circuit or on the street that are automatic? "Oh look, I can put my car in D faster than you"... or "wait a second while I put my car in N so I can rev." If you don't know how to drive a stick, then you'll have no idea what I'm talking about when I refer to technique. There are so many dimensions to clutch usage in the regulation of power output that just don't exist with push-and-go driving. I would suggest you trade in your glorified amusement park bumper car and get with the program. Once you feel the thrill of jumping off the clutch in first gear, hear the scream of peeling rear tires, you'll stop with your foolish AT postings on the RX8 site. I remember when I went to buy my 8, the dealer showed me an AT in the back lot that no one wanted for laughs. He said he would give me a great deal on it and we had a good laugh.

Some people seem to have made the odd assumption that other people can only drive stick or only drive automatic. Guess what, some folks can drive both ways!!! Drove jeeps both stick and automatic, drove cracker-box ambulance, drove dodge ambulance, drove duce and a half, drove evil metal box of a Humm-V, drove and still drive a Mazda 323 stick - but amazing amazing preferred RX-8 with ability to shift back and forth - easier on valet parking attendents, easier on car wash gangsters, easier on Mom when she wants to take the wheel! And I did not like the way the '04 shifted, which was the same lame way our old Ford farm truck shifted! And guess what - RX-8 are performance cars no matter which clutch system you select - and with $1,500 you didn't spend on a questionable transmission, you can get a honking big sound system, moon roof, and spoiler, or some pretty silver jewelry - and what have you got if you did spend the $1,500? Well, considering where you live and the traffic you have to face every day, most of your performance is only in your dreams!
