Caliper Painting Weekend

Does anybody paint the backside of the calipers? I'm getting geared up to do mine this weekend, and was curious if everybody only paints what they see.

You know the drill - reply with your thoughts

i think if you're going to paint it, then just pain the whole thing.

Word. If I were going to paint mine, I'd probably do the whole thing out of principle. That's just me though. Problem is I can't put my glass down long enough to paint a caliper...

Doc, that is what I was thinking, as long as you have everything masked, and ready to go, why not paint the whole thing. I was curious if everyone does or not.

I think a few brewkies are in order for this weekend TD while I 'm working...

I'm painting silver, then stenciling with PoLak graphics, then topping with black.

My 8 came with rust on the rear caliper near the hub. Where do you get paint to fix this?

I'll let you know as long as you send me some Rosedale's ribs? Man I miss KC BBQ!

I'm using the same paint as I am on the calipers, Dupli-Color. I have the same rust forming, and it looks like all 8's have the problem.

Yep, planning that also, but I don't whether to paint them silver or black. My calipers are going to black with silver logos.

I'm going to paint my brake pads tomorrow night. Probably green. I'm thinking the dust will look really cool.

PoLaK Stencils showed up today! Thanks Mark!

I should have them done tomorrow, but the wife unit wants to play golf first - damn. Looks like beers and golf with the wife - man life is tuff these days. I will start when I get home. Washed the 8 today in preparation for the event.

I thought the same as you, but those pix on page 1 from tlining changed my mind. Personal taste for sure, but I like the look.

I like the red on red, I plan on buying some decals this week and using them when I put a second coat on, not sure why but the Dupli-coat directions state to put another coat on within an hour of the first or 5 days later??

Well, ...The wife unit wanted to play 18 today, so the calipers did not get painted...I also started the smoker when we got back, put on some baby backs - yummm :p

The reason I started this thread, was to get replies to painting the back side of the cailpers - and now nothing got painted! Oh well, it will be done, it is only a matter of time. I leave for 7stock on the 9th, so be sure to check out my car if you are going.

I'm thinking the best combo for all our cars would be black with the car color for the stencils. So, mine would be Titanium Grey RX-8 logo by Mark, and Black top coat. :D

But, that is only one opinion. I'm sure the calipers would look good the color of the car also, with maybe white stencils... Man, too many decsions to make.

Regards,
Kevin

Ok, yeah. I'm not a paint expert, but I DO know that the same applies to spray-on clear polyurethane. I used it in making operator interface legend plates for industrial equipment. Pushbuttons, pilot lights, toggle & selector switches, stuff like that... all mounted to a stainless plate with transfer lettering to describe all that stuff. The plate is machined, then cleaned real good, then the lettering is applied. Then, spray-on the clear polyurethane. After two coats dry, the stuff is mounted. Final appearance is pretty darn nice & durable.

Anyway, if those times are not followed between the two coats, the polyurethane & the lettering all krinkles-up terribly. Then you have to disolve it all away to the bare stainless plate & start all over again. You can spray -on the second coat just after the first coat is set, no problems. But if you wait until the next day and do it, it will krinkle-up. Strange, cuz the first coat looks very dry, but that's what it does. Go figure, huh?

I have a red and painted the calipers red, also with the duplicolor kit, and really like it. But black may look cleaner. I haven't seen any pics yet.

That's too funny. I usually have aspirations to do something great over the weekend, then my wife steps in and "suggests" we do something else. Today instead of finishing my bar (a big need of mine), we ended up in the club house at Del Mar. It was fun though. The bar will have to wait until "next weekend." Maybe when you get your calipers painted, I'll have my bar finished. :D
