i am thinking about getting an rx8 for my college daughter, she flipped over the car. i have heard that the maintenance is high, and the oil has to be changed every 2000 miles????

You heard wrong.
The only real down side to the RX-8 is getting ~18mpg.
The engine is a rotary, it has a lot less moving parts than a normal piston engine. The car itself takes about 7 quarts of oil, but only half of that is changed each oil change.
I think the manual says oil change every 7500 miles, but I did my first one at 1400.
You should check the oil every other fill up, but the same goes for any car.
The build quality of the car appears to be excellent. There are some minor complaints about buttons cracking, but all of that is fixed under warrantee. I personally haven't had any issues, and I'm sure the same goes for the majority of the RX-8 owners. This car is a LOT better made than my Mustang... but I guess that isn't saying much

Manual states 91 or higher. Even the inside of the gas lid says to use premium.
I use premium every tank.
There are a lot of discussions about which type to use. Some claim no adverse effects of going with 87. I prefer safe than sorry.
