Buying 2004 RX-8
Hi,
I'm thinking to buy a 2004 RX-8.
As Mazda RX-8 owners, how is this car from maintenance point of view?
Will it spend too much time in the garage?
Do I need to fill its oil weekly/monthly?
Do I need to worn it up, each time I want to drive it?
Thanks

Its no different than any other car, take care of it and it will work as it should, and have faults for no reason to your knowledge.
2) Will it spend too much time in the garage?
If you park it in the garage then yes, if not then no..honestly, same as above as any car, it'll need to go in for basics like oil and tune ups, tires..all the usual..as far as other stuff, same as any car could break could be good, a chance you take with any machine
3) Do I need to fill its oil weekly/monthly?
Might not need to fill weekly, just need to check and keep an eye on it weekly or every other week. it depends on how much you are driving. they recommend after fueling up.
4) Do I need to worn it up, each time I want to drive it?
Not sure where you live, Depends on the Temp where you are, and generally i don't think it hurts to let any car warm up for a few minutes better safe than sorry, unless you have a warranty and a good dealer to take it to
GL and hope you enjoy your 8 if you get one

Buying any year rx-8 is a good thought.
The RX-8 does require regular maintenance much like any car.
Mine is only in the garage when I am home.
Mazda puts this stick in the engine. If you look at it every other fillup it will tells you when to add oil.
if you "worn up" any car too much it will not run well.
Your Welcome

OSM is a so let's be nice for a while.
Welcome to the forum. Please add location to your profile. Try out the search before you get flamed.
My '04 is great. I check oil every second fill up and add when required. When my car is in for normal service I get the dealer to address any TBSs or warranty work. No serious issues!
Good luck with the hunt.

Hi all,
Thanks for your replies.
I just moved to California, and I need to buy a car.
Actually this is my first owned car. Till now I had a company cars and I didn't need to care about car maintenance (Any problem, I got replacement car till the problem is fixed).
I like the RX-8 look and feeling, but I read some problematic reviews about the engine and the oil consumption of the car, and I thought it will be better to ask the people in this forum, since they are owners of RX8.
Next time I'll do a search before I ask.
Thanks all

It'll be a little more hands on with the oil and everything, but overall it's really not much more maintenance than any other car. Definitely use the search before you post though....I think everyone took it pretty easy on ya because this question gets asked about twice a week. Good luck with your decision though

Hey welcome to the forum and good luck with your search. I have an 04 and have never had any problems with mine. Definately warm it up before you shut it down. Its not the warming it up b4 u leave its the warming it up b4 you shut it down. If you don't there is a good possibility it will flood. I check my oil every week and add when needed. It's the same as any car, as everyone else said, do what the owner's manual says and it will run fine and last as long as you want it to last. Good luck and welcome again.

Take a look at the sticky threads at the top of each sub forum for the basic info.
such as: low torque, low hp, low mpg. Just remember that owners who are upset w/something make MUCH more noise than those who are problem free & happy. GL!

Not much different from other cars. No camshaft, so you don't have to replace a cam belt every 60,000 miles. RWD, and it still has axle boots, but they don't flex like FWD cars so you don't have the periodic CV joint and boot failure like most ordinary cars today.
>Will it spend too much time in the garage?
Only if you choose to not drive it. Mine is sitting home in the garage today since it's snowing and I took the beater to work.
>Do I need to fill its oil weekly/monthly?
How many miles will you drive each week/month? Most of us need to add a quart every 1000 to 2000 miles. I'm old enough to remember when that was considered to be excellent oil consumption.
>Do I need to worn it up, each time I want to drive it?
No. Just start it, let idle a few seconds (so oil pressure comes up, etc.) like any other car, and go. Just don't shut it off unitl it's warm.
Great car, lots of fun to drive. Plus, you get to sneer at your friends cars and say "Eew - that thing has pistons!"
