Breaking in question?

I have not purchased my 8 yet but, this month (November) is the month I'm going to do it. I live in Florida and I have a friend that can get me an 8 close to cost in the L.A. area. I'm going to be visiting my sister in Las Vegas at the end of the month so this would be a perfect time to get the car. I'm gettting the car close to invoice cost so its worth it to me.
Ok, since I've pretty much painted the picture already you can probably already figure out my question. I have to drive this car 2000 to 3000 miles in just a few days. From what I've read on this forum about the break in period was not to keep the vehicle at sustained speeds for long periods of time. Well, that will definately be happening and and it sounds like I'll have to be changing the oil on the way too. If I read right, I have to do this at either the 600 or 1000 mile mark.
If anyone can give me any advice as to if this info is correct and if I should even bother worrying about these things, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Tony

Well, you can vary your speed. It's a matter of discipline.

Yeah, I'm a big fan of heat cycling the engine for break in, but I usually brake them in hard, and methodologically hard.

If you are going to be in vegas with your 8, let me know! I'm local

As long as you change gears between 4-6 while you are driving back, and vary the engine speed a lot, you are going to be fine! Just change speeds often and play with the power between the gears!

Dont worry. Carry a quart of oil in the car (about 2 bucks at sears) to top it off if it gets low. Just check every 500 miles or so (every other fillup)

When driving back from L.A., get me some food at the Korean BBQ, then drive home. On the way for the first 600 miles try not to stay at the same speed for more than 10 minutes or so. But small variations should be sificient. Like 10 minutes at 70, then 10 at 75 then back to 70 or 65 for variety. Rememeber yer only going to have to do this for the first few hours and then forgetabout it.

Have fun!

I am planning on doing a similar thing. I've found a good deal on an 8 and will be flying in to buy it, and making a road trip of about 800 miles back to Atlanta.

Now the dealer told me, there was NO break in period necessary, but then again, he is trying to sell the car. The variable speed thing seems manageable, and not too much of a problem for 800 miles.

I've read in another thread, that someone tried to keep there revs down for so many miles. Something like nothing over 4000 revs for 400 miles, nothing over 6000 reves for 600 miles, etc. Is that a little overkill?

Wahoo!

Letting an engine idle for 5 hours is about the funniest thing I've heard all week!

Not only that, but idling for extended periods of time could be bad for the engine!

Agreed. That is what you would called excessive.

Letting your vehicle idle for long periods of time is one of the worst things you can do, your oil pressure is at its lowest when at idle.

I'd just use the simple break in method others have described, vary your revs for the first 1000 km or so and try not to rev it over 6 or 7 grand.

When you get your car, look at the break in procedure on page 4-7. That way you're not hearing something second hand from an Internet forum. Lots of the comments here are quite valid, and some are general "break-in procedures" that you might see for other engines and stuff. However for your own peace of mind, read the manual and then you know you're playing by the rules.

Oh - and enjoy the trip!

Simon.

Vaughn, just tell him to drive through Atlanta and park the car at Clermont Lounge. Let it idle in the parking lot for 5 hours while he sits inside and enjoys Blondie busting soda cans with her, uhh,
"cans."
