Brake squeal common on '8s?

After a day of ownership, the only thing we notice about our new car is a brake squeal at low speeds and just before complete stops. It seems to be coming from the front right side. In looking at the maint. documentation supplied with the car, there seems to be a history of this and attempts to correct it including new pads and machining the rotors. Is this a common issue and is there a recommended fix?

yes it is common, and there is a fix to it.

Mine use to squeal like yours, so i stripped and cleaned the cailpers and pads, then used copperslip on the sliders where the pads rest, and backs of the pads, problem solved, it's been 9000mls since and no squeal
It seems dealers don't know how to use copperslip

Our OEM Rotors & Pads are loud as hell. I have my original rear rotors on, because they last forever, but my god are they loud. I actually got them to shut up entirely for most of the time I've owned my 8, but right now they're bad because they aren't worn perfect. I just don't want to spend the money on all new rotors right now.

Easy solution in my opinion would just be aftermarket rotors and some premium ceramic pads.

I spent about 70 bucks for front and rear ceramic pads from the auto parts store (autozone) and a year later ZERO squeal and VERY LIGHT dust. Both of which were issues with stock stuff. Still on stock rotors, about 122k miles on them.

^ he's right im mistaken. last time i did my rear brakes I was cheap and threw on cheap semi-mets on oem rotors that needed to be machined on a lathe..

before that I had good ceramic pads on oem rotors and there was no noise.

I'm glad the seller kept good records. I'll find out soon enough if I'm wasting my money here. Anyway, in August of 07, the front rotors were machined and cheap ($67.50) ceramic brake pads were installed. I'm guessing that's when the squealing issues started since, in November of the same year, the car was taken back to the same shop and the rotors were machined again and more expensive ceramic brake pads were installed free of charge.

My shop first told me that good ceramic pads were the way to go to fix a squeal like that. Then, when I showed them this history, they are now saying I should probably go back to OEM brake pads and machine the rotors again. They called and ordered me some and I told them to be sure to get the parts mentioned in the service bulletin posted in the first reply to this thread and I am going to take them the SB to show them the recommended procedure. I'm hoping this will fix the issue. I will know tomorrow morning.

Mine only squeal when they are cold...after a hard brake, they are good to go. I guess I'm glad I've not had this issue, I'd go batshit insane after the first couple brakes.

I assume you are talking about your 07. The service bulletin covered 04's to 06's. They probably fixed it in production before the 07's rolled off.

LOL you'd hate my brakes right now. I'm wearing them down a bit more before I go ahead and just replace all four rotors and pads. They're fine from a mechanical perspective, they're just mind-numbingly loud if you have the windows down with no background noise.

i have an 05, and my brakes squeak like a mouse... i just learned to live with it. it sometimes squeaks less if you drive high speeds and brake hard... but, it always comes back.

Whenever I'm driving, if I hear people with squeaky breaks, I just freak out.

My goal is for them to be as quiet as possible with this next brake job. I'm thinking centric, powder coated black rotors with hawk ceramic pads.

when i replace them i'll go hawk ceramics though. the hps has too much dust.

My 8 has started squeaking and its driving me nuts........

I noticed the mechanic who changed my last set of pads, left the shim out so im guessing that this is causing it.

But my squeaking sounds terribly wrong, it sorta sounds like if sum1 is walking up an old creaky wooden staircase, like 'squeak, squeak, squeak' untill u let ur foot off the peddle.

The squeaking usually occurs at slow speeds, usually when coming to a stop or slowing down nearly to a halt. At high speeds, it whistles like a flock of birds.

Mazda brake pads, hardware, and grease seems to have fixed the problem so far. I guess I'll have to put up with a little more brake dust on the wheels but these are by far the easiest wheels to clean I've ever owned anyway.

(i clean them everyday because i have nothing better to do) but it just kills me that there is always dust on them after a short drive

Hawk Ceramics are awesome! They don't squeal and I have VERY little dust.
