Black cloth, what's the deal?

I've seen a few threads saying US cars will receive a completely black interior, and not gray, etc. The pics I have seen, though, all have gray cloth inserts on the seats, like the red and tan, but without any contrasting colors on the steering wheel.

What exactly is the deal, here? At www.mazdarx8.com the cloth seats are shown with grauy inserts. I think the inserts are very attractive and if my cloth seats are going to be solid black (which I have yet to see in cloth anywhere, and I can't believe Mazda put gray inserts on the seats on the website to only deliver something else) I might pass on the one I ordered and get a car with leather.

Can anyone help here? Has anyone seen a solid black cloth seat, or will we indeed get gray inserts?

Well, in the interest of giving you something:

Canadian cars will have solid black cloth.

BUT:

Canadian cars are also getting the headlight pissers, and supposedly the rear fog light also... so you can't necessarily judge by the Canadian cars, even though we are on the same continent.

The US WILL get all black cloth seats. According to mazda all cloth seats so far have been preproduction and don't represent what the cloth will look like. As far as i know there are no pics of the all black interior.

sorry don but that is essentially what mazdausa has told me also. they say all black, no gray at all. which is a shame because i too like the cloth we ahve all seen pics of. sports car international even mentioned them in their review and they liked them alot. i agree it is very confusing with that pic on the build section.

I feel pretty strongly about this. I think a solid black interior will look boring and I thought the contrasting colors were most stylish. I am going to call the dealer tomorrow and see when the soonest is I can get a car with red leather- either silver or titanium.

Mazda USA, you SUCK! Truth in advertising, please! They should at the very least change their website now that they know what the deal is.

My guess (purely hypothetical) is that the seats we have seen so far, yes they are preproduction and might change a little, are all black......... now now don't get me wrong they are not all the same looking black, maybe a different material so that in lighting or if you rub your hand on it in a certain direction it looks grey. Alot of Mazda cars out have "black cloth" seats and they have a grey tone to them, or they have a grey material and a black mesh over them (that is how my "black" '01 Miata seats are).

I'm not worried....... But then again I might be suprised

I belive the car that was listed in Automobile Mag was all black seats. This is too bad. I know several people that really like cloth and would pick it over leather any day. I'm personally not one of them, but you go to take care of both sides of the fence.

don't forget don that the headliner is a sort of gray color

good point! they may be saying black and mean it to be black but it may like a charcoal with alot of gry in it, so in different lighting ti looks more gray.

Actually, the black cloth on the Mazdarx8 website look all black on my computer (no grey inserts). That's why I chose it over the leather. I like the all black look.

well the latest pic of the cloth seats does appear to show all black cloth, without the possible shades of gray in them. however from this pic we can't see the "insert"areas so we'll have to wait for a better pic or get someone to ask the girls to move. i mean they're nice looking and all but there blocking my view dammit :p

Okay, it's been bugging me for a while, and I have to ask:

Why did you order an Aristotle instead of an RX-8?

My Protege5 has "Black" Interior but has fake suede on the outside and a greyish cloth in the center area. Same with my girls 2002 Miata C pkg, dark black cloth outside, greyish inside.
Plus you could always have a good upolstry shop do the inserts grey cloth, sude leather, whatever floats your boat. I wouldn't advise going backwards in line for this vehicle.

Well, ok, if you insist...

I strongly suspect that the black cloth seats in the RX-8 will be similar to those in my wife's '02 Miata, which feature a black mesh over a grey undercloth:

While it looks very grey in the photo, it doesn't look nearly as light in the flesh.

I hope I'm right, because that fabric is both very comfortable and very grippy, and I'll be more than happy if that's how my RX-8 seats are upholstered.

thought i would dig up an old thread.

eccles in the following pics the seats don't appear to be like those in your miata. to me it looks just like the cloth in the pre-production cars, contrary to everything mazda has said on the matter and contrary to the seats the girls were sitting on in the previous pics, the sides appear striped and not all one color :

this picture that zoom44 posted is the same one that a Mazda rep showed me at the Dallas Auto show when I asked her the question about cloth seats and insert colors ... she seemed to know everything we know and a little more ...

... She also stated that every RX-8 that has been seen todate with cloth seats are preproduction and will change a little (mabe more like the Miata, Mazda6 or Protege cloth black seats ...

I kinda like the Gray/Black cloth insert though… It looks not too bad w/ Sunlight Silver or Titanium Gray. If you don’t like the stock cloth, get the w/ all red or blue Recaro or Sparco seats, they looks cool. Or you can put on those white sheep-skin seats covers!:D
