Before shutting off your RX8

I learned something new yesterday at the car dealership that i never heard before. I dropped my car off for service and the sevice guy kept reving the engine then shut the car off. Then when he came back inside he said "you know why i reved your car up Its to clear out the junk out and you should do it ever time you turn off your car." Has anyone else heard of this. He said to rev it up to atleast 5000rpm I have owned my rx8 since 2003 and this is new news to me.

I do it cause the guy I bought mine of told me to do it to make the car start faster again, and not make it raw.

This is a tip common for the rotary. I had to use it on my TII to prevent flooding. I did not do this on the RX8 until I flooded it. Now, I do this every time. No flooding. I did that at the dealer and they told me if everyone did this, all the flooded stranded cars would cease to exist.

it doesn't prevent flooding. My car flooded once, and I reved it for 10 secs before parking it.

If you move your car while it's cold, just drive around the block. Simple as that.

btw, I don't regret flooding it. I ended up getting the upgraded batt, upgraded starter and some new spark plugs. The new starter is a must have for 2004's

The guy at the dealer said to do it everytime even if the car is warmed up. i drove 50 minutes to get to the dealer so the car was warm.

doesn't hurt to do it, but it's not flood protection.

Valid point about letting the car warm up.

I do not move the car around the driveway. And when I get ready to turn the car off, I rev it to 4k and turn the car off. The engine continues to rev down as it is off. This does work with the TII regarding flooding. And I have not had a problem with the RX8 since doing this. Maybe its not needed, but it doesn't hurt either.

Yeah, I usually make sure I have redlined at least once while still driving just before parking but if I didn't I will rev a little bit before shutting off, warm or not. Just cause your warm doesn't mean you've flushed any crap out.

I rev to about 2k. 5k seems kind of high. A 5k blip in idle wont clear carbon. Around 7.5-8k is all you need a few times in gear.

If that were so, then anytime you're driving, carbon would be removed.

there's no load at idle, you might be adding to the carbon buildup, if anything.

this is really only for moving the car short distances, because they run very rich at startup. for example, if you were to move the car out of the garage to wash it or something. any time you are going to drive the car and not let it get up to temperature, this is a good idea. otherwise, just shut the car off like you normally would and that way you won't look like a ricer every single time you pull into a parking space.

I rev mine to about 3k or so and shut it off right as the rpm's come back down to idle, and I shut it off while between 1-1.5k rpm I won't let it get under 1k before shutting off. It seems to help the next time I start the car.

I think running it to redline while driving once or twice a day (or more) would be more effective at cleaning out the carbon.

My 2 cents :

It doesn't entirely prevent the flooding... BUT it does burn up some of the left over fuel in the engine.....it doesn't hurt to do it. It is a good tip tough...

The service manager at My Maz serve center also told me when I first took my car for oil change. But I already knew that.............cuz I have several friends and a cousin who own RX8s and a 7. They've been doing for ages...lol..... It's a common tip that passed around Rotary owners....i guess

I wish the Mythbusters would have an RX-8 special.

Should you rev to 5k rpm and shut off?
Should you use synthetic oil?
Should you use fuel additives?
Should you have carbon buildup as excuse for flooring it a lot?

and so on...

I redline mine everyday as I take off out of my apartment complex, thats my redline for the day, unless I want to have more fun I always blip the throttle to about 3K then kill it. Ive never flooded and I still have my original engine and I own an 04. I believe 100% that my engine is as healthy as it is because I drive like its an indy car, every day, day in and day out. Only problem Ive ever had with my engine was oil leaks which are all fixed now

not to be insensitive, but do none of the newbies read the quickstart guide and/ or owners manual... at all?!!

all the basics are covered in that quick little pamphlet that takes less than 5 min to flip through. mazda also provides a DVD with each rx-8.

good grief.

we were all newbies at some point. but, some of us know how to turn a page... or pop in the DVD- which btw also takes less than 10 min to watch.
