Battle of the $30K RWD coupes

Nothing too much that's out of the normal. You read the same stuff here of people slamming 350z's, 370z's, WRX, EVO, Genesis coupe etc... I really did not see to much slamming the RX-8. How does everyone react on this site when some "outsider" throws a post up on the forum backing up some car he owns. Your gonna get slammed when you roll up like a bull in a china shop.

Personally I think all the hate for the 8 on that board stems from insecurities about their own cars. They completely ignore the 8's redeeming qualities while focusing on it's few flaws like gas mileage (which should honestly be a non-issue when comparing sports cars). They act as if all the other cars are the image of perfection yet the 8 is automatically out because it lacks torque and gets bad gas mileage.
Go drive one people. I only knock cars I have driven.

I have a 2001 Pontiac Firebird that I use as my DD and reserve the 8 for weekends since the Firebird actually gets a decent 25 mpg. But I must say that driving the two cars side by side really shows the difference between an American muscle car and the Japanese sports car.
I actually have fun driving both. Now I admit the Firebird handles like a pregnant yak, has poor visibility, the largest swaths of cheap vinyl in a car and the stiffest, most unresponsive wheel. But when you just want to gun it, it's very satisfying. And it doesn't just drive like a tank, it's built like one! I was once hit at low speeds by a truck and I only suffered a few scratches while he had a big dent. I'm pretty sure if it was my 8 I'd be crying over my crumpled car.
So I liken the RX-8 to a fine Japanese suishi meal - delicate, exquisite, refined, and delicious. But sometimes you are just in the mood for a cheap greasy burger and that's when the Firebird comes out.
So frankly, I wouldn't mind getting a Camero or Mustang to supplement my 8. Sometimes, you're simply in the mood for something different.

i can't tell you how sick i get of seeing all this anti-wankelism.
They get this terrible reputation of being "temperamental, unreliable, and liable to explode at any minute, killing everything within a 500 ft radius, including your wallet"
It's just not true.
the rotary engine is a marvel of engineering that simply requires a different kind of care and maintenance than a reciprocating piston engine does.
Imagine you're looking at two different women: the first one is your average all-american sweetheart type, the grassroots girl-next-door. the other woman is an exotic, willowy foreigner with olive skin and an awesome accent, maybe she's brazilian or mediterranean or something. The important thing to remember is that even though you're totally used to dating the all american sweetheart, you can't treat the exotic foreign hottie in the same way. her culture is different, her mannerisms will be different, and even her sense of humor will be totally different. You have to learn more about her and her ways before you can have a meaningful relationship with her, but once you learn how to properly love and respect her, she'll always be faithful and the thrill will never subside.
In short, pistons engines are like dime-a-dozen american girls and rotaries are like the mysteriously exotic foreign women you guys always talk about getting with but are too afraid of because you don't understand them. also, they're ninjas.
