Hi, I just got my RX-8 and I have a few questions.

1. Whenever I accelerate, I hear a far off, very high frequency screech, like something is grinding. It starts around 2k RPM and goes until about 4k RPM. Its very quiet but its definitely there...whats wrong?

2. I assumed the dealer oiled it before I bought it (they gassed it up full), but I'm not sure. Could lack of oil cause to above issue?

3. Since the RX-8 injects oil, does it use it all? Do I have to get it changed or will it just burn it all?

4. Can I refill oil myself/how? (Please for the love of god don't tell me to search, I've tried and it doesn't work)

5. What oil is the best to use?

I have no damn idea where the manual is, the car was used and I bought it two hours after it was traded in, and the salesman gave me the number of the guy who had it, who has apparently mailed it to me.

What the ****?

Change the oil every 3,000miles.

There is a yellow cap inside your engine bay, open it and pour in oil.

There is no "best", I use Castrol GTX.

1. Not sure, the RX-8 can make some unusual noises in unusual places and most of the time it means nothing. Need more info.

2. Don't assume anything about dealers - it will bite you in the ***. An oil light should (but don't trust it will) come on at some point. Take the engine cover off and the dipstick (top yellow/looped) should be right side of the engine towards windshield.

3. You need to have the car full of oil at all times. Yes it will use some so you want to check it and top off if necessary in between oil changes. Check it every other time you fill up with gas to be sure. Have the oil professionally changed every 3000 to 5000 miles.

4. Oil cap under engine cover, closer to the center but on left side of engine bay is where the oil goes.

5. I use 5w20 (recommended by Mazda) as far as weight and Castrol GTX as far as brand.

I recommend you sourcing a manual and study that thing like a Baptist studies a bible. All the same info can be found here but you need to dig around. Start with reading all the Sticky's at the top of each section of this forum.

Well whenever I put my foot on the gas, a very high pitched squeaking sound appears that sounds as if it is very far off, like a grinding of two un-oiled pieces of metal, or a very fast dental drill. It has thus far never affected the performance. I can't really describe it better than that, that's really all there is.

The conversation was as follows:

Dealer: We'll gas it up and tune it up for ya.
Me: You'll fill the oil?
Dealer: Yep.

Seeing as how he specifically stated he filled the oil I assumed he had. The oil gauge reads a hair above half right now, is that enough??

I must be missing something. I AM going to change it, but I would like to understand how if the car is burning all of the dirty oil why it would need the have the oil changed. I assume the crap that builds up must stick to the pan or somesuch, anyone care to clarify?

EDIT: Yes thank you JRITCHER I have read that several times, as well as all of the other stickies, however I didn't find anything about squeaking noises.

Was it cold, maybe brakes? Maybe diff?

No, that's what I was thinking originally, but it still makes the noise when the engine is midline-warm. The brakes seem fine, but it's the same noise that the brakes would make, you know that high pitched whine? I suppose it COULD be the brakes but I don't see how they would make that sound when my foot is off the brakes and on the gas.

The "squeaking noise" will have to be diagnosed by the Mazda dealer.

The car has seven quarts of oil in it when at the top mark on the dip-stick. It will burn about one quart every thousand miles. So after a few tanks of gas check it. When it gets past half between the two marks on the dip stick add a quart. The oil in a car is there to lubricate and cool the engine. The oil in a car is not like the gas, where it gets near the empty and you fill it up again. The engine has to be near full of oil all the time, so don't let it get below the lower mark on the dip stick or you you could damage the engine. Does this help?

Thank you I AM a member of EVOLV, I read the MW forum often, and I have picked my way through the tech section several times not no avail I cannot find anything about my squeaking issue. Can no one actually help me?

Please don't force me to drive all the way out to naperville so that the sound can mysteriously stop and the RX-8 can be like

"No I'm sorry, I don't want to be fixed, so I'm gonna stop making the grinding sound specifically during the dealer visit so that you can get nothing done and get charged 500 dollars for the dealer to tell you you're fine and another 60 for the gas to get there and back"

The engine will not burn every bit of the oil. You may need to put a quart in every other fill up, depends on how hard you drive. It better not burn through all the oil, or somethings VERY wrong with your car!!

As for the noise, belt?

I understand THAT, but why wouldn't the heavier, grimier oil float to the bottom and get burned first, so that the oil would constantly replenish itself like getting a blood transfusion??

Not that I won't change the oil, just curious.

So a mosquito tone (http://www.freemosquitoringtones.org/) does appear when you come on and off throttle in my car. Sounds like a faint whistle that I can only notice when I am going slow with the radio off. Happens all the time since day one.

Yeah, sort of like when a truck has really, really awful brakes and stops right next to you but much, much quieter.

This is VERY noticable because of its upward pitch.


It starts at a lower tone than it finishes.

It only lasts for 1/4 second. Really quick sound with an upward pitch change.

I have been told the sound is the clutch, which in your case means it is going out.

Some tell me it is an intake air flow something or other. (moving air makes a lot of noise)


All I know is my car has not blown up yet, so I am not too worried.




And make sure you research marbles in a blender before you EVER ask that question

Uhm, why?

EDIT: OOh, wow. Well if the clutch is going out than I really am screwed anyways...

1. This thing only has 13K miles on it. Could it really be the clutch?

2. How much is it to replace the clutch/how long would it take?

3. What would be the next sign of clutch damage?

4. How/can I confirm that it would be the clutch without taking it to a dealer??
