Annoying start issue.

Hey guys, glad to be on the rx8 band wagon. Im not new to mechanics, or to imports. Im a little less familiar with the rx8 engine than most, but not a stranger to it by any means. Were having the famous flooding/no start issue. I did hours worth of research, bought new plugs, and replaced them. The old ones were nasty, and soaked. upon checking for spark, both leading coils are dead. The last time we drove the car, it was fine. The next day, it just cranks. I know the coils are notorious for going south, but for two to do it out of nowhere, at the same time seems a little sketchy to me. I have ordered 4 new coils, they just havnt arrived yet.

I removed the ESS, and cleaned it, it was quite dirty. However, the two leading coils are dead. Im MUCH more familiar with Mitsubishi engines, and electronics and this would be easy to figure out with them. However, they use two coil packs, with two outputs each.

Is there a fuse or relay for both leading/trailing coil packs? I havnt removed the coils yet, but i cant find anything about two coils going bad simultaneously.

Thanks guys!

You may have had a single bad leading coil, then the other good leading coil went bad. They wear out. Period.
Get the new ones installed with some new plugs. How old are the sparkplug wires? 7 years?

You could try swapping the leading and trailing coils positions to see if the car will at least fire up until the new coils arrive.

BC.

My only Skepticism is that i cant see two coils being perfect one day, and both dead the next day. That kinda crap doesnt happen on a normal basis. I know it happens, its just not a very common thing for TWO to go bad at the same time. At least not with the stuff im used to. Ill be tinkering on it a little more today.

ill post results

^it happens...... change the coils and you should be ready to go. rx8 should be changed out frequently. Or upgrade them for better performance. BHR has a great kit for our RX8
