mine's not over bumpy roads - but I think I have the same thing....
only notice it when going at highway speeds - sounds like from behind steering wheel - kind of a ticking sound - dont hear it at lower speeds. AC on or off and radio on or off - no difference.

I just took mine in today for a clanking sound. Mine was coming from somwhere behind the pedals, it sounded like something heavy was loose that would swing a hit other parts of the car.....
Hopefully they can figure it out.

If it's in the gauge cluster (rattle stops when you touch the top of the gauge pod), then what I did was go and buy some black RTV. Run a couple of 2-inch long beads on some wax paper and wait for it to set. Then, take a plastic knife and push it gently between the gauge pod and the dashboard at the bottom "corners". It worked for me.

Massive - could you by any chance post a DIY guide for this? My Mazda dealership has "checked" twice and could not find anything wrong. Actually, the first time they added insulating foam, but the problem came back.
I've gone from "this is driving me NUTS!" to zenlike acceptance of it, to merely wishing it didn't existing (where I'm at now). But this sounds like the solution to all my problems

I had the rattling too just after 5 days of getting the car.. but I pushed really hard against the instrument cluster to push it back in its place and the rattles have gone. I still get them over huge bumps, but now they are far less noticeable. Give it a try.

I have it too...every expansion bump. With the radio off I want to pull my ears off!
My left rear door is rattling also.....
Do you push down from the top, or forward against the gauges?

I push down from the top, and this 100% silences it. That is, until you let go
Mine rattles all day long, though worse on rough roads.
Sounds like this is a general problem of the 8....

i have this one noise- not really a rattle because its too fast to be called that. almost a buzzing. it always sounds like its coming from in front of me. but pushing on everything with in reach doesnt help. i happened to turn my head awhile ago while hearing the noise-it was coming from the rotor emblem in the head rest. i squeezed/pinched it front to back and the noise went away and hasnt returned yet.

I guess I can write up something. I know I've got that RTV sitting around here somewhere...
My annoying rattle now (since I've taken care of the instrument cluster and the door frame speaker mounts), is *probably* coming from the sunroof. It could, though, be a sound reflection from somewhere on the rear dash. It's hard to tell, but no amount of touching/pressing/sliding/banging will rid me of the "sunroof" rattle when it's going--which, thankfully, is rarely...

has anyone tried accessing to the steering wheel yet? Is it difficult? am worried if i mess it up, especially the air-bag. Is there a thread where accessing the steering have been discussed? Please kindly point me the way if there's one. I've did a search but 100 over threads turns up just for steering...

If your noise comes from the instrument cluster, then read JeffS's comment here:

Wouldn't it be the shocks or struts whatever is in the front since we have 18 inch wheels they have to work twice as hard over bumpy roads noticed it on the many of my cars with different type of wheels sizes that's what I think.

I have the same rattle by my steering wheel, it was the console with the dials rattling, fixed it with a wedge of paper between the dial console and the rest of the dash, was able to push the wedge in far enough that it could not be seen. When you are driving just push down on the top of the dial console and see if that stops the rattle.

The Turkish Delight
The moonroof cover is the only thing that I sometimes get a rattle from. It just does it when it is closed all the way, so I move the cover (not the sunroof) back about 1/4 inch and the rattle stops.

My normal RX-8 key-fob bangs against the dash a lot. It is annoying, but I can;t really blame the car for my driving (though the ignition placement is close to the dash)......
I spent some time yesterday making sure everything in the car was buttoned down, so i could tell the rattles from just something moving around. After doing this, the car was much quieter inside. I still do have a couple of rattles to deal with, but you would be surprised how a noise in the glovebox or in the cupholder area or in the rear floorboard can sound like a rattle. Also- if you have the spare tire kit- check to make it is as tight as possible. Mine felt tight, but I could move and even rotate the tire. I also noticed a loose strap with plastic covered metal hooks on both ends on the spare tire wheel. it was just banging around in there........ :-/
On a side note- I found out you can fit a quart of oil on top of the owners manual packet in the glovebox- fits nice and snug. A lot better than loosely tied down in the trunk. :-)
