better then an analog one? I like it for two reasons, it takes up less space then an analog one and I can glance at it and quickly know "exactly" how fast I am going.
The digital speedometer on the RX8 is actually not that bad... and I do like it... but I'm still a purist and prefer analog ones...
Mazda did a great job in designing the instument cluster... I remember going to a mall last summer and they had an RX8 and when I looked inside, I was like HOLY CRAP!!!! This car is awesome!!!! :D

I especially like it when I'm using cruise control.
Each time I press the increase / decrease speed button on the steering wheel, the speedo changes by exactly one MPH. I can rapidly press the button several times and the speedo changes by the same count - very cool.

I like it. I check engine RPM more often than vehicle speed and when I do want to know my vehicle speed, it's faster to refer to the digital readout inside the tach than to have to look at an additional analog readout next to the tach.
my gf's pontiac SUV has the digital speedo on the windshield... i ono the name of the car but its that ugly big one. aztec? i ono but its really convenient on the windshield. You dont have to look down when you want to check your speed.
anyways... yeah i love the digital analog and just like manual once i got used to it, its hard to have it any other way :D

I like the digital just fine, but honestly I prefer the analog speedometer in my other cars. Maybe I am a traditionalist. I will say that I like the 8 guage cluster better than my other cars and obviously an analog speedo would ruin the setup, so I hope Mazda doesn't change the speedometer.
At first I didn't like the digital speedo. In my peripheral vision, I kept seeing the number change and I would momentarilly look down to see what idiot light just winked. However, after a few days, I got used to it and it doesn't bother me at all. I love the accuracy and I like the fact that it is so compact and easy to read. I've come to prefer it now.
The digital speedo is great. Mazda does a great job on dash boards. My 84 626 had the optional electronic dash which included digital/analog tachometer. It was a graphic representation of the engine's power curve that lit in green, orange and red as you passed through the normal rpm range to near red-line to red-line.
I really expected to not like it, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that I do. I don't think I would want a digital tach however. That's the one I pay most attention to anyway.

rxeightr beat me to it -- I love the digital speedo b/c passengers can't see it. I did have to get used to it, and learn to stop glancing down every time the numbers changed.
And yes, it's the butt-ugly Aztek that has the heads-up display.
