Exclamation to all the owners

did u guys buy this sealent package. the finance lady was trying to sell me this sealent thing and she was saying something bout new clear coats not having lead so the car is unprotected. she said this sealent "is like telfon". she did this demonstration with this card, on 1 side it was "protected" and on the other it was "unprotected". she droped a few drops of water on both sides. on the protected side, the water just sat there and built up into 1 big golb and on the other side the water was absorbed into the card.

they seal everything, outside and in. they say if u ever get any bird crap, sap, acid rain, etc marks on ur car then they will fix it for free. and on the inside too, if u spell soda or whatever, they will clean it free. it was 595 but since im a student she gave me 395 .so i took it. anyone else buy this?

Is the sealant they offered similar to the teflon stuff discussed in this thread?

https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-show-shine-26/teflon-coating-6542/

There are a couple of interesting points in that thread, like whether it affects the appearance and if it makes it harder for body shops to match the paint when doing repair work.

Anyone else have any experience?

I have had experience with this with my buddy's H2. First of all, you paid to much since it usually costs $99 for the inside and $150 for the outside. Besides the small price gouge, the **** doesn't work that well. They have been using it at rooms to go and other furniture stores for 3 1/2 years now. It is a protectant, but they are not going to body shop your car if you get sap or bird **** on it. My buddy's H2 had bugs, sap, etc on the roof -- which is not everyday visible. Anyway, his dealer down in Coral Gables said they would wash it, but whatever stayed on was his responsibility since he left it there for over 24hours. ONE: How did they know that it was there for 24 hrs. TWO: So great, as soon as I get any spot on the car, I can either wipe it off in 3 seconds or drive 45 minutes out of my way so thay can either wipe it off for me or tell me it has already been there too long?

LIKE ALL THAT CRAP THEY TRY TO SELL YOU AT THE DEALERSHIP -- STOP IT. GET YOUR KEYS. GET IN YOUR CAR. GET OUT AND ON THE ROAD.

CAN I HEAR AN AMEN !!!!!!!!!!1

My Honda dealer tried to sell my wife that on her 2000 Accord. I said no way, simply because it does not protect against rocks. One year later I had the hood repainted because of a good sized chip. Glad I didn't let her spend the money on it.

Exclamation

These add-ons are what is know in the biz as a "pack", or, more appropriately, over-priced, worthless garbage. Wax the car with good wax and wash it regularly. You'll have little problem.

Go get you $ back. Tell them you looked into Teflon and the way it was shown to you was invalid since they used a card rather than an actual car part. It was fradulent and the Better Business Bureau would want to know about this tactic. Tell them you will graciously allow them to keep the Teflon on the car if you get a refund and some all wather floor mats.

it will work, trust me.

What I would get (or rather, I will, when I buy mine) is a product to stop rock chips. I think 3M makes one, but I can't think of the product's name. Anyone else know what I'm talking about?

It's a thin clear film that goes over the front of your car. Pretty much invisible, but it protects from rock chips. They've got the same thing that goes over headlights to protect them as well. As far as I know, there is a guarantee against rock chips.

Okay, just found a site: www.stongard.com

Stongard has a four year, $2000 warranty against rock chips. Not bad!

I'm sure there are other brands out there, too.

Also see xpel.com / clearbra.com ... 3M does make a product too, not sure what they call it. A guy I know has it on his 360 Modena... even on the side view mirrors You can barely see it though... nice product.

It is never to late to claim fradulent behavior on the dealer's part. You can claim the entire demonstration was scientifically unfounded and you are liable to make a better business bureau claim if the situation is not remedied at once.

I told my girlfriend to INSIST that they not put the clearcoat protectant and undercoat on the paint. She told the dealer that, and they've been using every scare tactic imaginable to get her to buy it. If they keep it up, I'm paying the dealership a visit. I have a feeling they'll stop bugging her after that.

Don't get it. Zaino the car when you get it, maybe use Stongard on some critical points and the results will be MUCH better.

hi, i'm a newbie to posting in this forum..i have been reading the threads here for a while....and patiently waiting for my Ti 6spd....

a friend of mine also told me about the clear film made by 3M....here's the website...
http://cms.3m.com/cms/US/en/2-168/czrRFFU/view.jhtm

it would be useful in a place like arizona, where rocks flying around on the highway are way too common...i'm planning on having this installed along with a tint.....but it''ll be a while before i get my car......meanwhile the proud owners can enjoy their new toy.....

Hey everyone,

I thought I would shre my thought and knowledge on the paint protection film.

3M is the maker of the bulk material called ScotchCal. It is a 6 mil urethane film that has a clear coat finish on the top to help blend it in with the car.

Companies like StonGard, Xpel and RockBlocker make and design pre-cut kits that are designed to fit the contours of your car. Most often the kit inlcudes the hood, bumper, fenders, mirrors and sometimes they have door edges and door cups as well. It really depends on the car and the designer.

The idea is to cover the high impact areas of the car to help prevent rocks and other debris on the roads from damaging you new investment you just made. The prices are usually based upon how much material is used to make the kit not on popularity of the car.

Different companies offer different types of warranties anything from product warranties to damage warranties. So make sure if a warranty matters to you that you know what warranty you are getting.

The cars are just coming into the U.S. so I am sure that everyone will get moving on getting a kit made up real quick.

I hope this helps with and questions you may have had.

Take care and enjoy the new ride. They look way cool!!

If I remember correctly, Consumer Reports stated that this is a dealer gimmick, and the Scotchguard and Undercoating actually cost the dealer about $99 and they charge as much as $795.00. I believe the magazine also stated that all automobile manufacturers Scotchguard the fabric from the beginning, and the paint job is usually protected and guaranteed for as much as 100,000 miles. I think the article also listed this markup as one of the top 10 cons to avoid in purchasing a new vehicle. I have the magazine somewhere around my house, so I will see exactly what it says -- when I locate it.

I've been using a teflon product called "techformula" on all my cars since '98, including 2 red cars...it has held up outstandingly with no paint fade and no waxing. The only thing I really miss is that smooth "just waxed" feel to the touch, but I think that is more of a personal (maybe obscene) obsession with my cars. Don't really know any other (dealer's) products or how they work, just know that one does work in the sunny mini-desert, so-cal, town of el cajon where it's always sunny & always hot. just my 2 cents, at least one teflon product does work, and yes, I will be coating my 8 with it as soon as I get it..

OK, well, how about the INTERIOR treatment that my optional protectant package does as well? Guaranteed replacement against any stain that won't come out. Carpeting, seats & all that.

My dealership is strongly enforcing that all RX-8's must get this treatment, but if y'all convince me it's BS, they're gonna have a fight on their hands! I only paid a downpayment so far. Car's about 1 month away I think. I forget, but it wasn't chump change they're talking about for this. $700 or so? Not sure, my stuff's not with me where I am.

(Thanks for this thread BTW.)

The day after I took delivery I went to a place called Digicut systems to get my windows tinted and left there with tinted windows and their protective film product called Digisheild on key areas of the car. Everything they installed was digitally cut for a perfect fit. At first I was hesitant to let them apply the the film, (they call it a shield) to my painted surfaces but I saw other cars, and motorcycles, and decided to go with it. I had the entire plastic nose done and about 1/4 of the hood which included the leading edge of the fender flares right behind the headlight. I also did mirrors, behind the rear tires, and where you grab the exterior door handle( fingernails). I didn't do behind front tires because it allready has that thick orange peel layer but I think I'll go back and have them do it for extra protection. They also do door edge and protection for the fender flairs with this product but I didn't opt for that. When under artificial light you can see it on there but they insisted I not freak out untill I see it outdoors, and honestly, it almost completely disapears when in natural light. As you all know the car draws considerable attention and nobody noticed it on there untill I pointed it out. I washed and waxed last night and bugs washed off easy. Please note that I'm considered to be "****" by many about my cars and I'm real happy. They said they have installers all over the country and it come with a 5 yr warranty. Do your research as i'm sure all are not the same. 800.452.7311 for info.

Yep, I'm definitely going ot put that 3M clear bra on my 8 when I get mine. I spend a lot of my driving on highways and I would definitely want my front end to be protected from stone chips.

Also, over here in TO, Canada, during winter we got tonnes of salt and sand on the road. It just makes sense to get it if you are considering keep the car for the long run.

This is along the same lines as the 3M protectant:

Has anyone had the undercarriage of their cars spray coated? I'm not sure what the substances are that companies use, but I've heard in cold climates that they are very effective at curtailing salt and preventing rust.

are these "bras" those big *** palstic things you see on cars that are supposed to be clear but you can see them easily and they look like ****?

or is this some type of almost invisible film thats hardly detectable yet very protective despite its incredible thinness?

I could see the seam for the 3M thing from 25 feet away. Dust and dirt will collect at the seam as well. I had to call Mazda to keep my dealer from putting it on my pre-order.

Also, they couldn't tell me if there was UV protection with the product, because if there is, it WILL create a two-toned hood after several years.
