Ahhhhh Some People are Just...........
Well, I'm on Rt 1 in Laurel Maryland heading back to my house with my girlfriend in the car. I pull up to a red light and this guys honks his horn at me. He the proceeds to ask me if I had a V6 in the RX8. I say no its a Rotary Engine. He says oh so its a V8. I again say No its a Rotary. Then the guy looks at me and say oh ok, well that's a very nice car. I say Thanks and peel off to get as far away from such a retard!
I mean even if you have some common sense and I say Rotary Engine. Wouldn't you know the shape of a Rotor and think it must be a rare engine at the least?
Even my girlfriend was like, DAMN the guy was stupid and looked stupid in front of his women who was in the passenger seat of his car.
Just thought I'd share that. Has anyone else experienced situations like this? :p

Most people who talk to me about my car know what the rotory , or wankel is.. I did witness an older (70ish) gentleman try to explain the concept to his wife through my rear view mirror.

Did he had anyone in the car with him? If so, he may have been trying to impress them. But you fixed that! Ha ha ha ha..
Either way, he was probably one of those people who think they know everything about everything. Just ask him, he'll tell you.

I still can't explain it to my father (an italian immigrant). Even after I tell him it's a rotary, he insists it has to have cylinders and how many does it have. I just let it go over my head and start another converstation. My wife is starting to understand the difference becasue of the way the engine drives and sounds. She isn't totally sure what a rotary is, but she knows it's different.

I wonder why I wasn't blessed with this knowledge at birth as you clearly think people should be.

A nice step up!!!
What’s this car have in it? A gyratory engine? The sales person at the dealership I bought it from said it had a V8. Of course he also told me it had run flat tires.

I can tell you it sure wasn't me at that red light.
I live in Laurel, MD (off whiskey bottom rd.) and just purchased my beautiful 8 the other day . So if you see a blue 8 in the area its possible that it is me.

I wouldn't be so hard on those that don't know much about the rotary. Heck, I'm still learning myself and even as a new owner, I didn't even know how many rotors were in my engine but I'm not "retarded".

A guy I work with tried to explain in to me a few years back and I sort of got the concept. I still didn't know much about the rotary engine until I got in the showroom and they showed me a cut-out mock-up running that I got a better idea on how it works. My dad knows a lot about it's history and talks to me about it when I go home.
If people who ask me if it's a V6 or a V8 give me a blank look when I tell them that it's a rotary, I just tell them it's got the power of a V6 and burns gas like a V8!

One of the best investments I made was in this rotary keychain that I can use to demonstrate how the rotary engine works... it makes it much easier to digest when people see it moving:

I guess my point was.......... If I say its not a V6, its a Rotary and then I say its not a V8 its a Rotary. Wouldnt you then ask well what is a Rotary and stop asking about V's????

Wow... That's kinda harsh, man. Takes all of 30 seconds to give a simple explanation of how the engine works. And you have to remember, Mazda is still the only company that uses rotaries in cars. So, to most people, having pistons is the only physically possible way to make an engine.

Go to www.howstuffworks.com and search "rotary engine". You will get a very clear explanation of how a rotary engine works.
