Advise needed between manuel & auto

Hi everyone, my name is Jon from Singapore. I am looking to purchase a RX8 but have not decided on manuel or auto.

Can someone here please advise or provide me more information on the different between manuel & auto? What about the 0-100km seconds for manuel & auto.

I sincerely thanks for the kind input and it will be greatly appreciated.

In the US the Manual has 20% more HP. As far as acceleration times, most list the manual at around 6 flat to 60mph, I've never seen any official time for the AT, but then again, I never really paid much attention to it.

There is a significant difference in performance between the manual and auto 8s. If you value speed and quickness, you will certainly enjoy the manual better. Not only is the manual "hi power", it is also combined with a 6-speed transmission to get all that power to the wheels in a more efficient manner. It is a much more spirited driving experience!

I would imagine 0-100 (0-62 in the states) to be somewhere around 6 seconds with the manual, and about 8 or so with the auto.

If you can drive stick, there is no reason for not getting a 6spd. The differences are pretty substantial, the auto shouldn't even exist.

I'd say if you're at all interesed in 0-100km times then you don't want the Auto. The Auto RX-8 is slower to 100km than many economy cars.

I owned both. First the AT because the wife convinced me that she couldn't drive stick. Well, after three months of slow starts from stanstill and a very tall 2nd gear, I realized that I had no choice but to move on to the MT. I couldn't be happier. It's a completely different car compared to the AT. Faster, more control, and more fun. This is my first MT car and it really wasn't that hard to learn. Learn from others and don't buy the AT, you'll regret it.

it is always preferable to drive a rotary engine car with a manual, the engine needs to rev to stay healthy!

Do they also have the 5 speed manual with the 4 port engine in Singapore like they do in Europe and Japan? If so, make sure you go for the 6 speed manual with the 6 port engine, very big difference from what I hear (I refuse to drive the 4 port, I think it would make me cry).

Really seems like everyone support the manual version but it is damn expensive compared to the auto in Singapore.

Manual 6 speed costed $131 988 in Singapore while auto only at $105 988.

Almost $30 000 different man. lol

The automatic RX8 is heavyer and has less power than the 6speed 6port version. when you mix the extra weight, lower power and 4speed automatic together, you get a slugish 'numb' feeling power, harder to modulate the power and the gear spacing is so far apart in the auto its hard to be in the right gear all the time, throtle response is slow and the 'triptronic' is a joke.

not only that, but if something happens to the trany down the road, id much rather limp home with a bad manual car than a bad automatic car.

not much heavier (<30lbs?, i don't remember exactly, but that weight is right where you want it, so no big deal), i still weigh much less than a GT equipped manual. throttle response is exactly the same as the 6 speed I drove. tiptronic works great.

on the other hand, needs more gears, and more revs/power would be nice too , but i still have no regrets after 40K miles. The auto is slower than it should be off the line, but that's what happens when you mix ATs and rotaries. It'll carve up the corners just fine though, and once moving it's a reasonably quick car.

i guess some of the weight of the trany is offset by the lighter 4port engine?

you feel like the throttle response is the same? wow, maby its a difference between my car and the auto I drove... i felt like it was a lot slower to respond under 4k rpm.

I should clarify that the reason I dont like the triptronic is cause of the slow reaction from when i shift it till it is in the next gear. letting off the throttle for a second (like you would shifting in a manual helps a lot) but I feel like even the SMG paddle shift in the M3 is slow :-/

i guess when i think of a 'clutchless' shift car, i always remeber the feeling of the shift in a 355 or 360 ferrari : shift, bang, in gear. harsh but fun.

i understand it can be a hard choice, esp. if you live where you have to drive in stop/go trafic a lot. when i get out on a back road im glad I got the 6spd, but when im in the city, id love an auto

i didnt really give my advice, i would just say drive them both, then you have to decied what fits your needs best.

True indeed in singapore, traffic everywhere and there is no way u can run unless on the highway. There was even once when i was driving a 1 litre car with a ferrari beside me, once green light this ferrari dash like crazy but who knows later in the front happen to be red light again.

I guess I'm one of the few people who loves the AT. Yes, if I was running races every day I would get the MT. But I don't race...ever! I drive to work. I drive to the store. I drive to restaurants. I drive on vacations. I drive along the coast. I drive in the mountains. None of those things require a huge amount of torque or horse power.

Personally, I would choose the car that fits your driving habits. The MT is fast, and that's it only advantage. The AT is better for stop-n-go traffic, better on windy mountain roads where it's good to have both hands on the wheel, better if you're trying to drink a latte, better if you're talking on a phone, and better for times when you just don't care which gear you're in.
