Advice Please!! :)

Hi guys!

Ive been a member here for about 2 weeks and love all the information you guys give to each other. Im an 18 year old going to pick up a 2005 rx 8 with 80000 km's on it tomorrow. Ive done my best to ask the seller all of the questions I could think of, and here is all of the information he has give to me.

"The car has all of the options you listed except for the navigation system. It has not been in an accident before, and as far as I know, I am the second owner. It needs no work done, and is in excellent condition. I have summer and winter tires for it which are used, but have a fair amount of tread left.

I have all the service records since I have owned the car, and haven't done any major modifications to it.

The tires are falken for the summer tires, and continental winter, not sure of the models. I have had the oil cooler line recall done, as well as the engine recently replaced due to a known issue with the internals of the renesis engine. I have used premium fuel the whole time I've owned it, and 5w20 oil as per manufacturer recommenation. I have installed an axial flow engineering short throw sifter, and clear corner marker lights. Other than that, the car is stock. The car has been mostly serviced at the midas
The only warranty the car ha left is the engine warranty

The exhaust is a Borla kit. The rear windows are limo black, and the side windows are smoked. It was like that since I bought it, and have never had any problems over the side windows. The ipod connector works through the steering wheel and deck but can be a bit cumbersome at first. I will show you how to use it when we meet. The ipod hooks up in the glove box

The rotarys are a bit different. I have never had my car flood before or after the engine swap. The problems are not nearly as bad on the new engines, but under curtain conditions it might still flood. The biggest thing to do is let the engine warm up for 5 min or so before shutting down. Starting it up cold and shutting it off right away is the biggest problem for flooding. The new engines and the higher rpm starter have drastically cut down on the chances of it happening. Again, I have never had my car flood before

Sorry if that's a bit much to read, but I figured it would be best if I supplied you with as much info as possible. So I just wanted to make sure that everything sounds legit and that Ive done my homework properly. I figured who better to ask than the experts over here at rx 8 club. So whats your guys opinion? does everything sound good? Anything else you think I should ask before I buy it?


Also, do you guys have any advice on how to drive the car? its a 6 speed... more specifically, if I'm looking for the best fuel milage possible, what would be the best rpms to shift at? I hear that these cars will get smoked of the line, so if someone were to try and test me out, what would be the best rpm to be ready floor it at?

Last question, with the information he provided, will the rx8 still have flooding problems even though he had the engine and the starter replaced?

ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!

Sounds like a pretty good deal. One thing I would do is to get a carfax report on the car but other than that it looks good.

For normal driving shift around 3-4k rpm. All the power is at the top end so if you want to most performance keep it between 7-9k rpm.

Don't believe the dealer. They won't do anything to the car except maybe change the oil/

Their famous line is"The car is fine. It doesn't need a tune up"

Replace the plugs, clean the MAF and check the air filter.

If it is going to have engine compression issues, it is in the range where they will soon start to develop. Get a compression test before you sign anything.

After that, they are 4-5 mods that will help the reliability/longevity of your car and we can discuss them after you get the engine compression/intake manifold vacuum level tested.

Says the engine was recently replaced. See if you can find out everything that was replaced with it and what the mileage was at the time and track the maint. intervals from that point going forward. With any other used car out there, a new engine would be a red flag to me. But, not an RX-8 unfortunately.

This seems like a private party seller, not a dealer correct?

Actually seems like the previous owner took care of the car. A couple of good things I heard were that he was aware of the start up and shut down procedures to avoid flooding, he has all service documents, etc.

Seems like the car was taken care of by a good guy.

The mods are tasteful too, I would try to dish out the cash for another compression test just to be on the safe side, but it seems like a good seller and car to me...

The compression issues in the '04-'05 models seem to have very little to do with owner care or driving habits, IMO.

I agree, I guess my point was if the previous owner at least knew the basics such as how to avoid flooding and stuff of that nature, then it was probably a well taken care of car.

That's also why I said a compression test wouldnt hurt at the end of my post also.

Nothing will reflect the previous owners driving habits.....

All you can do is make a judgement if the condition of the car is what you're looking for.

We are not discussing compression testing as a way to peer into the previous owner's habits. We are discussing the benefit of getting a compression AND intake manifold vacuum test as a way to avoid buying a used RX-8, only to need a new engine shortly after taking delivery of said car. This is especially helpful when looking into buying a 2004 or 2005 model.
